Opening today at the Rockpile Museum in Gillette and running through Dec. 31: "Chief Washakie: Through the Lens of Time," an exhibit from the American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming.
Washakie, long-time chief of the Eastern Shoshones, became Wyoming’s second representative in the Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol in September 2000, joining Esther Hobart Morris, the first woman to serve as a justice of the peace.
"Washakie: Through the Lens of Time" examines different images and impressions of Washakie throughout history and today. He was a leader of the Eastern Shoshones from the 1840s until his death in 1900 and today is seen by many as someone who embodied all the traits of great leadership. He exhibited bravery, skills as an orator and diplomat, and a belief in the importance of education.
