Children's book author Jon Scieszka has been named the first national ambassador for young people's literature by the librarian of Congress, James Billington. The post carries no specific responsibilities; rather, Scieszka is expected to act as "an evangelist for reading."The Library of Congress is also the home of the nation's poet laureate.
Cheerios is contributing $50,000 to the young people's literature program, and some publishers are providing unspecified support. Scieszka is being paid a $25,000-a-year stipend. His 52-book series TRUCKTOWN releases next week.
