Doug Harvey at CSU

The public lecture: What Isn't Art? takes place in Griffin Concert Hall, University Center for the Arts, Wednesday, April 9, at 5:00 p.m. An open forum will take place at the Hatton Gallery on Tuesday, April 8, at noon.

Doug Harvey is an artist, curator, and critic. Since 1997 he has been the chief art critic for LA Weekly, where he has authored over 300 biweekly articles. He previously served as a contributing editor at Modern Painters and Art issues. Harvey has also been a prolific contributor to museums and galleries and has authored essays for a number of important museum publications. His essay Encyclopedia Hawkinsonia, appeared in the 2005 catalogue for the Tim Hawkinson exhibition at Whitney Museum of Art. Harvey conceived of and co-curated the CD The New Now Sounds of Today: Songpoems by 21 Contemporary Artists, has curated numerous gallery exhibitions, and is the Keeper of the Permanent collection emeritus at the Museum of Jurassic Technology. In 2003, Harvey authored the essay, Reverend Ethan Acres: From the Ridiculous to the Sublime, for the Department of Art's Critic and Artist Residency series at CSU. Harvey's lecture, "What Isn't Art" is based on his book in progress, exploring the history of the boundaries between life, art, and popular culture. the lecture is made possible by the FUNd at CSU.
