Summer Exhibitions and Events at the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper

 

This weekend marks your last chance to see El Caballo: The Horse in Mexican Folk Art at the Nicolaysen. The exhibition considers the storied tradition of the horse in Mexican visual culture, spanning geography and discipline. Until July 8

You can also catch two solo exhibitions, Tracy Linder: The Obligation to Endure and Abbie Miller: Zipped

Tracy Linder’s work (pictured) has been exhibited across the country and is held in a variety of museum collections. She employs agricultural materials to construct sculptures and installations that investigate the connections between land, food sources and life. Until August 5

Abbie Miller utilizes textiles and the fashion world to create sculptural forms that consider the interplay between body, materiality and form, while engaging the concepts of craft and labor. Until September 9

Also on offer is the Nic’s 8-week Wensday Night Live Concert Series, starting July 11 with “folk” duo, The Cantrells. All concerts are free, from 5:30 to 7:30, with food and drinks available for purchase.

Search begins for new E.D. at Nicolaysen Art Museum

The Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper, known throughout the region as the NIC, invites applications, nominations and inquiries for the position of Executive Director. The Nicolaysen Art Museum is currently conducting a national search for a visionary, experienced leader to serve as Executive Director. We seek an experienced museum executive who has substantial knowledge of and passion for the arts and a proven track record in development and fundraising. Must have solid competency in strategic planning and management, including oversight of fiscal matters and the management of facilities and resources. We welcome candidates who, by their nature and experience, have an eagerness to provide collaborative leadership and partnership with our motivated museum team, which includes our board, staff, volunteers, and the wide community of NIC supporters, friends and associates. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership, vision, management, and fundraising of the museum; as well as the oversight of the education and curatorial programs. The NIC has celebrated several major accomplishments over the past several years, including an AAM accreditation, and requires an Executive Director capable of helping elevate the museum in visibility and reputation. The Executive Director is the museum's most visible representative to the community and oversees the day-to-day operations, public identity, mission, and direction of the Nicolaysen Art Museum.

Amazing Arts!

Dozens of artists from across the country will be showcasing and selling their works - paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, jewelry and more - in 2010.

In addition, the Nicolaysen Art Museum's galleries will be open and free to the public throughout the festival.

This year, NIC Fest's Main Stage will feature 14 different musical groups performing throughout the weekend.
On Saturday, during breaks on the NIC Fest Main Stage, visitors can wander down to the corner of Beech and 2nd street to hear the unique African/Cuban drum sounds of Tanbores Afro-Cubano. This group from Colorado, led by Colorado University professor Thomas VanSchoick, plays traditional and contemporary rhythms from Africa and Cuba. Some of the styles that they will be playing are Rumba, Yambu, Guaguanco, Guarapachangueo, Rumba Columbia, Bembe, Guiro, Iyese and Bata Rumba. Some of the more interesting percussion instruments that group members will play include Conga, Bata, Cajons and Chekere drums. Other members of the group include Dave Crowder, Scott Mast, Eric Walker and Maurizo Capperelli.
In addition, the Wyoming Shakespeare Festival Company will kick off its 2010 summer tour of the state with a special performance at NIC Fest on Sunday.

Plus, NIC Fest also offers lots of other unique things to see and do, such as the annual Art on Wheels car show, chalk art competition and Kiwanis pancake breakfast.

NIC Fest is held primarily on the grounds of the Nicolaysen Art Museum & Discovery Center, 400 E. Collins; but also makes use of the City of Casper’s Historic Monument Plaza and Walkway (just north of the museum) and Gazebo (west side of Beech Street) as well as three surroundings streets – Beech, Kimball and Collins, which are closed for the event.

Floods can't dampen Wednesday Night Live at the Nicolaysen Art Museum

By now, you've read about the flash floods that hit Casper last Friday, July 3. Torrential rains flooded a number of buildings on the Casper College campus, including the Gertrude Krampert Theatre which was preparing for "Peter Pan" (for info, go to http://www.caspercollege.edu/theatre/indexx.html). Downtown, water inundated the Nicolaysen Art Museum.

We're cleaning up after storm.

The Nicolaysen Art Museum & Discovery Center will be CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC through at least Wednesday as the staff and contractors clean up water damage from the flash flooding that occurred as a result of the intense rain/thunderstorm last weekend.

Fortunately, museum disaster preparations and planning prevented any of the art works in the exhibitions or collection from being damaged.

Parents of students enrolled in summer art camp classes next week will be contacted about whether the classes will be rescheduled or, if not, refunds given.

Despite the cleanup, "Wednesday Night Live" will still be held this week from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on July 8. Featured group is Dan & Cliff!

The building will be close, but please bring your chairs or a blanket and join us for the music on the lawn behind the museum. It's free!

One-time NIC director lands Colo. Springs job

Sam Gappmayer, the one-time director of the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper and a Wyoming Arts Council board member, has a new job. Here are the details from The Denver Post:

Sam Gappmayer — executive director of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts in Ketchum, Idaho, since 2002 — will helm the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the museum announced today. He is expected to begin his duties in October.

He replaces Michael De Marsche, whose controversial four-year tenure ended with the announcement of his resignation days after the museum opened a $30 million addition in August 2007.

"Sam Gappmayer has a significant history of achievement in taking the arts organizations he has served to higher ground," Jon Stepleton, chairman of the arts center's board of trustees, said in a statement. "And he has done so in a highly collaborative way, with great integrity, openness and sense of communityconnection."

Prior to his tenure at the Sun Valley Center, Gappmayer's previous experience includes heading the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (1999-2002), Fresno Art Museum (1996-1999) and Salt Lake Art Center (1992-1996). Before that, he was director of the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper.

Richard Renaldi exhibit at the Nicolaysen

Western Lives by Richard Renaldi runs through December 30, 2007. Curator of the Nic, Lisa Hatchadoorian, writes, "The beautiful, insightful, and poignant photographic portraits by Richard Renaldi convey a universe in a single moment. They are deeply empathetic to our shared human condition, as well as documenting lives lived in certain places: the expansive and mythological West, the Great Plains region, Bus Travelers, and the Navajo Nation in Arizona. Renaldi's photographs stop us in our tracks as they force us to see beyond the outwardly mundane scrim of yet another anonymous persona to something more poignant, strong, fierce, unique and human underneath."

Fall Exhibitions at the NIC

Mary Lucier -- gives an artist talk, Saturday, September 15, at 10:30 a.m. Commissioned by the North Dakota Art Museum

Richard Renaldi -- gives an artist talk, Friday September 14, at 6:30 p.m. There will be a catalog for purchase.

The opening reception will be Friday, September 14, 2007 at 6:00 p.m.

Nicolaysen's Permanent Collections Exhibition

Celebrate along with the Nic as they display selections from the past forty years from their permanent collection, May 11-July 22, 2007. The opening reception for this show is on May 11, beginning at 6:00 pm. There is free admission and Kid's Corral to members, $5.oo admission to each for non-members.

Edie Reno at the WAC Gallery

From April 16-29, 2007, visit the Wyoming Arts Council Gallery for an exhibit by Fellowship Honorable Mention Artist Edie Reno. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 8-5. An artist's reception will be held May 10 from 4-5:30 in the Gallery.

Reno has shown around the West and internationally for over twenty-five years.
