MTV's Streeter Seidell at CWC in Riverton for free show Sept. 7

Comedian, editor, author and staff writer and star of MTV’s The CollegeHumor Show is on the Central Wyoming College campus Sunday, Sept. 7 and the public is invited free of charge.

Streeter Seidell appears on the main stage of the Robert A. Peck Arts Center at 7 p.m. He is the executive editor of CollegeHumor.com, co-author of the site’s first book, The CollegeHumor Guide to College, and co-star and staff writer of the site’s first television show, The CollegeHumor Show on MTV.

He has written and acted in many CollegeHumor original videos and penned hundreds of articles for the website.  Seidell is also a standup comedian and co-hosts the site's monthly New York comedy show, as well as performing regularly at clubs in New York and over 30 colleges last year. 

Outside of CollegeHumor, he has written for The New York Times, Men's Fitness, Mental-Floss Magazine, McSweeney's, The Washington Post, Wired Magazine, and Metro New York.  He has also appeared as a talking head on numerous television shows including spots on CNN, Fuse, TruTV, VH1 and Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC. 

He is currently the co-host and writer of “Pranked,” on MTV.  Seidell lives in Manhattan.

Restoration comedy classic launches UW's spring semester theatre season

The University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance's spring season opens with "The Beaux' Stratagem" at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7-11 on the Fine Arts main stage.

Directed by John O'Hagan, "The Beaux' Stratagem" is George Farquhar's tale of two insolvent rakes who to try to marry into money to replenish their coffers.

A late Restoration classic with a surprisingly moral compass, "The Beaux' Stratagem" was first produced at the Haymarket Theatre in London in 1707, and was one of the most frequently performed English comedies for more than a century.

"The beautiful thing about this play is how it bridges two eras so wonderfully by retaining elements of the more raucous Restoration comedies," says O'Hagan. "We're taking a light-hearted approach to this piece, making it really frothy and fun."

The story centers on aristocratic rakes Tom Aimwell and Jack Archer, who have nearly exhausted their limited inheritances on drink and gambling. With a mere 200 pounds left between them, they leave the high life in London for the countryside in hopes of marrying rich and repairing their fortunes. Posing as master and servant, they roam about until they find a wealthy heiress for one of them to marry. However, their scheming is soon complicated by true love and a band of thieves.

"Farquhar wrote what made him laugh," says O'Hagan. "The play pokes holes and has fun with the moral and societal strictures of the time, but he lets the political ideas come through without being terribly overt."

UW launches theatre season with comic musical by alumnus Sean Stone

Happiness and its dysfunctional and often hilarious pursuit is the theme of a new comic musical that will have its premiere at the University of Wyoming this month.

"Rainy Day People," composed, written and directed by celebrated UW alumnus Sean Stone ("Good Morning, Athens"), launches the Department of Theatre and Dance's 2011-2012 production season Sept. 28 through Oct. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. on the Fine Arts main stage.

Based on an award-winning play by UW alumnus Todd McCullough, "Rainy Day People" is a musical about people who wish that they were happy, but are content only when they are making themselves or others miserable.

Stone auditioned for McCullough's wistful comedy when it was first produced at UW in 2002, and even though he wasn't cast, he was taken with the piece. So when he was required to adapt a work for his graduate thesis at New York University, the choice was obvious.

"I loved Todd's piece the first time I saw it," Stone said. "There were so many really great characters and unanswered questions about them that I wanted explore further."

McCullough's play was inspired by Dostoyevsky's "Notes from the Underground," a novella detailing a love affair between an emotionally stunted government employee and a prostitute.

Stone's musical expands on the original play to explore parallels between modern America and Dostoyevsky's Russia: an overbearing government and culture, a significant class divide, a sense of helplessness among people, and a disconnect between individuals and the consequences of their actions.

The musical examines how this environment leads to "rainy day people" who set their own world into chaos because they do not know how to engage fully in their own lives. The music supports the theme and features bright, fun, catchy pop tunes that belie the characters' jaded view of the world.

"Why is it as a society that we perceive ourselves to be largely unhappy, while societies that are much worse off economically and politically seem to have their heads wrapped around how to be happy in their day-to-day lives?" asked Stone.

Stone notes that as dark a comedy as "Rainy Day People" is, it is ultimately a hopeful show, because it's about people learning to identify and pursue healthy wants and needs and become their whole and best selves.

UW's "A... My Name is Alice" is "a boodle of laughs"

The University of Wyoming's 2011 Snowy Range Summer Theatre season closes with "A ... My Name Is Alice," a bright and lively musical revue that presents a funny, bawdy and insightful kaleidoscope of contemporary women.

Called "a boodle of laughs" (The New York Post) and "delightful" and "so sophisticated" (The New York Times), "A ... My Name Is Alice" is filled with life's ups, downs and in-betweens from a modern woman's perspective.

The five-woman cast takes on multiple roles to explore the many facets of contemporary women's lives through scenes, monologues and songs. They explore the horrors of parent/teacher conferences, the delights of a male strip club and the tragedy of losing a parent. The music ranges from 1960s doo-wop and wistful pop ballads to soul-filled rhythm and blues.

Originally produced by the Women's Project at the American Place Theatre in New York, "A...My Name Is Alice" played a long duration at the Village Gate Off Broadway and won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical Revue.

The revue was created by veteran directors Joan Micklin Silver and Julianne Boyd and involved a variety of comedy writers, lyricists and composers who contributed to the songs and sketches.

"Noises Off" makes some noise in Cheyenne starting April 8

"Noises Off," a play by Michael Frayn known as one of the funniest plays of the late 20th century, will open on Friday, April 8, 7:30 p.m., at the Mary Godfrey Theatre in Cheyenne. Performance dates are April 8-10 and 15-17. Director of this Cheyenne Little Theatre Players production is Jim Rolf. Wyomingingarts staffers will be looking for our SPCR colleague Mike Corso in the role of Tim Allgood.

Tickets go on sale Feb. 16 for Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" at Casper College

Tickets for the next Casper College Theatre production, Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” or “What You Will,” will go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, Feb. 16.

“Shakespeare’s charming romantic comedy about a pair of twins is just the show for the wintertime blues,” said Richard Burk, director.

The story tells the tale of twins Viola and Sebastian who become separated in a stormy shipwreck. “Presuming the other lost, they make their way through into Illyria, where they meet Duke Orsino, who loves the Lady Olivia, who will have none of him, but falls for Viola (disguised as “Cesario” the servant to Orsino). Meanwhile Olivia’s kinsman Sir Toby Belch and Maria, along with Feste the Fool, Sir Andrea Aguecheek, and Fabian all wreak havoc on poor puritanical Malvolio. This play is charming, farcical, cheerful, and fun,” said Burk.

The play will run February 23, 25, 26 and March 1 through 5 beginning each night at 7:30 p.m. on the McMurry Mainstage of the Gertrude Krampert Theatre Complex. Assisting Burk will be Sean McIntosh with scenic and lighting design and Douglas Garland with costume design and makeup.

Tickets for “Twelfth Night,” or “What You Will” are $12 for adults and $10 for children and teens, ages 5 to 18. Comedian Eddie Ifft at UW Nov. 12

Looking for a good laugh? Comedian Eddie Ifft performs Friday, Nov. 12, at 9 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Union ballroom. The Friday Night Fever event is free and open to UW students.

Ifft was one of the five finalists in the recent MySpace/Sierra Mist Stand Up or Sit Down Challenge.
