Art and Landscapes the Red Desert is is a professional-level juried art exhibition that includes photography and fine art pieces by local and national artists. The intent of Art and Landscapes of the Red Desert is to create a dialogue about public lands in the Red Desert and communicate how these lands are used and their significance to those who live, work, play in, and otherwise value this area. The BLM is currently revising its 20-year management plan for large portions of public lands in the Red Desert and it is our hope that a visual dialogue will encourage community engagement with this public land planning process.

Journal of American Veterinary Medical Association features work by Lander artist Susan Grinels

The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association Dec. 15, 2012, issue will feature a pastel portrait of the beloved basset hound “Polly” (shown above) by Lander-based artist Susan Grinels.

Grinels was asked by Polly’s owner, Dr. Lisa Dawson of the Lander Valley Animal Hospital, to create the portrait of her aging basset hound Polly, now 15, who came into the clinic as a stray puppy in a snowstorm and grew up to have her toenails painted bright colors by Lisa’s daughters..

Grinels has gained a following and reputation for her animal portraits and paintings, a path that combines her love of animals and need to paint and draw. After being a vet tech for many years, and never quite managing to leave that career behind, Grinels decided to follow her dream of becoming an artist. She studied at the Corcoran School of Art and graduated with a BFA in graphic design.

Even after that accomplishment, Grinels still finds herself helping out at local vet clinics, while focusing on her artistic path to convey a sense of presence and personality in her animal artwork. Her delving into understanding the importance of human and animal relationships has led to notable achievements, including the Pastel Journal’s “Creative Spark,” and numerous awards in local, regional and international art shows such as Art Show at the Dog Show, Pastel Society of the West Coast, Art Association of Jackson Hole.

She is a member of the Lander Art Center and the Pastel Society of the Northern Rockies, and this summer will accept a medal as a member of the International Association of Pastel Societies’ Master Circle.

Artist Statement:

“In 1964-1968, we were in Alaska, my husband was in the Air Force. He gave me a box of oils for my birthday and I had no idea what to do with them.  The Service Club offered art lessons for $1 for 1 night per week with a local artist.  I painted for a couple of years until Bob was transferred.  We came to Cheyenne in 1973 but it wasn’t until after the flood of 1985 that I joined the Cheyenne Artists Guild.  I took a class called  Sponges and Rags from Cheyenne artist  Maryalyce Larsen.  I’ve taken several workshops at the Guild and when attending the Wyoming Artists Association Conventions I would sign up for whatever was offered.   I prefer painting in oil but the paintbox got too heavy to carry to the CAG loft where I painted each Thursday.  I joined the Weekly Art Challenge a couple of years ago and have painted  with a box of Pelikan half pans.I had a one person show at the Cheyenne Civic Center in 1994.  Was honored to sell several pieces. The first time I entered the CFD Western Spirit Show, 2000, both my 16 x 20 and miniature painting were purchased. I’ve been juried into the CAG National show twice.”

"Wyoming from the Air"

Laramie artist, Linda Lillegraven's new commission for the Wyoming Military Joint Force Readiness Center in Cheyenne was installed today. The oil on linen painting, Wyoming from the Air, is a panoramic view looking down at the Medicine Bow River from 20,000 ft. on a summer day. The painting was created on a curved substrate of fused poplar and masonite to follow the curve of the wall at the Readiness Center. The work was commissioned for the facility through the 1% for Art in Public Buildings Program of the State of Wyoming. It is one of five new commissions created for the facility.

Neltje's "Don't Tell Me No" exhibit opens Sept. 15 at Tanner-Hill Gallery in Chattanooga

New work by Sheridan County, Wyoming, artist Neltje will be featured in an upcoming show at the Tanner-Hill Gallery in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The opening reception for the "Don't Tell Me No" exhibit is on Saturday, Sept. 15. The show runs through Oct. 26. Susan Grinels' pastels focus on the "presence and attitude" of Wyoming wildlife

Susan Grinels recently received an Individual Artist Professional Development grant to attend a workshop in Big Timber, Mont. While talking with WAC staff about her IAPD final report, Susan mentioned that she's been in a number of recent exhibits and will have five pieces in the upcoming national show at the Headwaters Center in Dubois. We asked her to tell us a little bit about herself and her work... and she did.

Susan Grinels is a Lander-based artist working in pastels and mixed media. She is a transplanted Southerner. She grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, always wanting to be an artist, and eventually did go to art school at the Corcoran School of Art in DC. She has been drawing since graduating from art school in 1991, but it wasn’t until the late 2000s that she began drawing/painting with pastels. Focusing on animals, she tries to convey a sense of their presence and attitude in her paintings. Wyoming wildlife gives the artist an abundance of subject material. Susan has been in the Pastel Journal as a creative spark challenge winner and has won awards in the Art Show at the Dog Show, Pastel Society of the West Coast, Art Association of Jackson Hole and numerous regional/ local shows. She is a member of the Pastel Society of the Northern Rockies. She has work going to Dubois next week to be in the 63rd National Art Show running July 21-29 at the Headwaters Center.

Linda Lillegraven (Laramie, WY) loves the austere, open landscape of the West’s high plains and paints them both in oils and pastels. Cokeville Arts Council sponsors plein air painting workshop with Kathryn Stats

The Cokeville Arts Council is pleased to announce a two-day plein air painting workshop July 19-20 with one of the finest landscape painters in the West, artist Kathryn Stats. This oil painting workshop will include demonstrations, group and personal instruction, and a critique. Kathryn will show students how to set up a good composition, use proper values, get light into your painting, and color mixing.

Kathryn’s earliest lessons came from the books of such painters as Emil Gruppe and John F. Carlson; she later studied with Utah artists Ken Baxter and Frank Erickson. Her love of color, unerring sense of proper light and skillful brushwork make her strong, deliberate paintings feel effortless. Her floral studies and the distinctive landscapes that have become the hallmark of her work are in private and public collections worldwide. Cost for two days: $160

Gregory McHuron conducts free plein air painting demonstration June 9 at GTNP

The Grand Teton Association invites the public to join world-renowned artist Gregory I. McHuron, for a live plein air painting demonstration at Grand Teton National Park's Blacktail Pond, one of the Park’s most beautiful overlooks. The event is free and open to the public. McHuron will paint on site Saturday, June 9, 2012, 4:00-7:00 pm.

A leader of Jackson Hole’s plein air painting tradition, Greg McHuron primarily paints wildlife and landscapes throughout the United States and Canada. Classically trained, McHuron is a master draftsman and favors capturing the natural world using oil paints and watercolor/gouache.

A co-founder of the Grand Teton Association’s “Artists in the Environment,” (he shares the achievement with renowned plein air painter Conrad Schwiering) McHuron began sketching at an early age. His interest in wilderness and wildlife propelled him to graduate from Oregon State University with a degree in Art, and a curriculum emphasis in Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife studies.

“Painting oils and watercolor/gouache en plein air for the past 35 years, I am inspired by and able to distill my passion for nature in a direct and personal manner by painting my emotional response to the ‘WOW’ that I see as I watch scenes unfold,” says the artist. “People have said that they are immediately struck by my strong sense of design--then, the interesting color combinations, juxtapositions, and light and dark patterns. The common thread in all my work is that I was THERE - that I have experienced what I turn my brush to."

McHuron has taught workshops, given demonstrations and participated in quick-draws for a variety of organizations including the Wyoming Artists Association, Wind River Artist Association, Scottsdale School of the Arts and the Lodge at Palisades. The National Museum of Wildlife Art, CM Russell Show, Grand Teton National Park, Isle Royale National Park and Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve all include McHuron’s work in their permanent collections.

McHuron paints the West from Alaska--venturing above the Arctic Circle--to the Southwest, doing whatever it takes to “get the painting.” Ever the explorer, McHuron is fearless in his quest to create. Standing in rivers, on the edge of cliffs, in a bobbing raft down the Grand Canyon or on a ship along the coast up to Alaska, riding horseback into wilderness areas, or accidentally finding myself in the middle of a buffalo stampede---it’s all part of Gregory I. McHuron’s mission to paint the “WOW.”

“Between Heart and Place,” An Artist Explores Homeland in Collection of New Landscape Paintings

Trio Fine Art Gallery, 545 N. Cache Avenue, Jackson, will host an exhibition of the works of Kathryn Mapes Turner August 1-18. Artist Reception will be held on August 9, 5-8 p.m., Turner will lead a conversation on creativity as it relates to the landscape at 6:30 p.m. FREE and open to the public. About the artist and her work:

Turner was born into a fourth generation ranching family in Jackson Hole. As a teen, Turner had the opportunity to study with acclaimed landscape painters and then continued her art education in such celebrated places as Italy, Mexico and Washington DC. The artist has since returned to her native Wyoming, but remains committed to her evolution as an artist beyond the sphere of her youth. Kathryn’s hard work has yielded both local accolades and national recognition. Last fall, her painting, “Siena” won the “Best in Show” at the American Impressionist Society. Her work is also featured in celebrated national exhibitions such as Birds in Art at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum and Western Visions at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Southwest Art Magazine once distinguished Turner among the “Artists to Watch,” predicting what has indeed become a most promising career.

Sculpture and portraits highlight summer line-up at UW Art Museum

Two new exhibitions opened Saturday at the UW Art Museum. Artist Linda Fleming was at the museum last week to help install her exhibition, Linda Fleming: Modeling the Universe, which include more than 60 maquettes and one large-scale sculpture on the terrace. The maquettes offer insight into her creative process, while the large work, just outside and adjacent to the gallery, provides an example of the scale and space of one of her larger, completed works.

Also opening on Saturday is an exhibition from the permanent collection of artist self-portraits and portraits of artists. Through the Looking Glass: The Portrait of the Artist is debuting at the Art Museum and is part of the museum's Touring Exhibition Service. Starting in the fall, this exhibition will be available to schools, libraries, other museums and community institutions around the state for no charge except one way shipping. Judging & reception for Wyoming Conservation Stamp Art Competition will be held April 13 in Cheyenne

Judging and a reception for the 29th annual Wyoming State Conservation Stamp Art Competition will be held Friday, April 13, at Wyoming Game and Fish Headquarters, 5400 Bishop Blvd. in Cheyenne. The wildlife species for this year's competition is the greater short horned lizard or horned toad.

The Game and Fish has received 59 paintings this year from artists in 18 states competing for the $3,500 first place prize money and the right to have their work reproduced on the 2013 conservation stamp. All paintings will be on display at the reception. A conservation stamp is required for most licensed hunters and anglers. Approximately 100,000 conservation stamps are printed each year.

Judging will take place on the afternoon of April 13. Following the judging, Wyoming Wildlife- The Foundation and the department will host a reception open to the public beginning at 5 p.m. with winners announced at 6 p.m. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

Lander artist and CWC prof Matt Flint opens show in Park City, Utah, on Feb. 24

From County 10: Central Wyoming College Art Professor Matt Flint has a solo showing of his recent paintings at Gallery Mar in Park City, Utah. The show, “Up Close and Far Away,” opens February 24. The Gallery is located at 436 Main St., in Park City.
From the WAC: Matt was awarded a 2009 visual arts fellowship from the Wyoming Arts Council. His work was featured in the 2009-2010 WAC fellowship biennial show at the Wyoming State Museum in Cheyenne.
