"Black Friday" becomes "Art Friday" at Trio Fine Art in Jackson

News from Trio Fine Art in Jackson:

Just in time for the holidays, Trio Fine Art will be hosting a showcase of smaller works with a special reception held on the traditional Black Friday. During “Art Friday,” November 23, the gallery will have extended hours (10 am- 8 pm) to host visitors and ring in the holidays with new artwork, live music and refreshments. Gallery artists include valley favorites: Jennifer L. Hoffman, Kathryn Mapes Turner, and Bill Sawczuk. 

Because the gallery artists/owners believe art is meant to be shared, they are providing this as a festive opportunity to make artwork attainable to as many visitors as possible.  The show will be on display through January 5, 2013.  Free shipping and free gift wrapping will be offered until Dec 24.

Featured artists:

Kathryn Mapes Turner: In this body of work, we include a lot of drawings.  For me, drawing is a very expressive medium that can illustrate the artist’s creative thought development.  It is a foundational practice that we use to understand our subject matter.  In this way drawings can communicate the artistic process in a dynamic way.

Jennifer L. Hoffman: The holiday season is always so full of hustle and bustle - Black Friday is exciting but hectic!  We thought we could provide a little bit of an artistic respite from the rush.  I love smaller works because you have to step in closer to take them in.  It’s almost as if I (as the artist) am in a dialogue with the viewer.  Drawings are special because they are so pure – there’s no color or impasto to hide behind.  It’s just the bare bones of my thought process.  Because they are both so personal, small works and drawings just seem to fit together!  I am excited to see this show come together.

 Bill Sawczuk: “Since we will be exhibiting a variety of media, it is a special opportunity to see works on paper as well as small oil studies. For this exhibition, I prepared a collection of small plein air paintings that feature historic local building and landscapes. In my drawings, I depict animals.”  This is a rare opportunity to acquire drawings by Sawczuk since he doesn’t always make them available for sale.

Public invited to attend Wyoming Arts Council Board events Nov. 8-9 in Riverton

The Wyoming Arts Council (WAC) will hold its quarterly board meeting in Riverton Nov. 8-9. The meeting will be held at the Fremont County Library on Thursday from 1-4:45 p.m. and on Friday from 8:30 a.m. until business is concluded.

Agenda items include: Review and discussion of the nominations for the 2012 Governor’s Arts Awards, progress report on the WAC’s community development and the arts program; update on the new communications strategy; review of grant programs; and discussion of upcoming WAC-sponsored events.

The board invites individuals and organizational representatives to attend any part of the meeting to observe the board process, and to address the board during the public comment session beginning at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. Comments about the agency's policies, funding priorities, on-line granting system, and other arts-related topics are welcomed. At the conclusion of Thursday’s session, a public reception for members of the WAC Board and the greater

Fremont County community will be held from 5-6 p.m. in the Miller Community Room at the CWC

on campus as new WAC staff member Michael Lange will be performing with CWC musicians in a jazz

It’s a good thing to have a poem about voting in the week of the election, and here’s a fine one by Judith Harris, who lives in Washington, D.C.



My Mother Goes to Vote

We walked five blocks
to the elementary school,
my mother’s high heels
crunching through playground gravel.
We entered through a side door.

Down the long corridor,
decorated with Halloween masks,
health department safety posters—
we followed the arrows
to the third grade classroom.

My mother stepped alone
into the booth, pulling the curtain behind her.
I could see only the backs of her
calves in crinkled nylons.

A partial vanishing, then reappearing
pocketbook crooked on her elbow,
our mayor’s button pinned to her lapel.
Even then I could see—to choose
is to follow what has already
been decided.

We marched back out
finding a new way back down streets
named for flowers
and accomplished men.
I said their names out loud, as we found

our way home, to the cramped house,
the devoted porch light left on,
the customary meatloaf.
I remember, in the classroom converted
into a voting place—
there were two mothers, conversing,
squeezed into the children’s desk chairs.

Professional theatrical agent Craig Holzberg to present master class at Casper College

Professional theatrical agent Craig Holzberg will present a free master class for those interested in professional theatre on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Thomas H. Empey Studio Theatre at Casper College.

Holzberg is president and founder of Avalon Artists Group, a full-service talent agency with offices in both New York and Los Angeles. “Avalon Artists Group represents actors and models of all ages for film, TV, theatre, commercials, voice-over, and print,” Holzberg said.

During the master class, which is free and open to the public, Holzberg “will cover what to expect, look for, and focus on in an audition for agents,” said James Olm, Casper College music theatre and voice instructor.  A question-and-answer session will follow Holzberg’s presentation.

A guest artist at Casper College, Holzberg is also the agent for another Casper College guest artist, Lindsie VanWinkle, who is playing the lead of Eva Peron in the Casper College fall musical “Evita.”

Jersey boys Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi head line-up for tonight's "Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together" benefit concert

Forty years ago, Bruce Springsteen serenaded a loving girl named Sandy in “Fourth of July, Asbury Park."

Now he’s joining forces with other artists to raise money for the victims of a vicious storm with the same name. 

Christina Aguilera, Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel and Sting will join the Boss in a benefit concert Friday at 8 p.m. at the NBC Studios at 30 Rockefeller Center. 

Jimmy Fallon and Brain Williams will emcee the event.

The show, titled “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together,” will be shown across the entire NBC Universal Network, viewable on NBC, Bravo, CNBC, E!, G4, MSNBC, Style, Syfy and USA. 

Money raised will be donated to the American Red Cross to provide shelter, food, emotional support, and other assistance to the millions affected by the disaster. 

The personal connection among stars like Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Sting and Joel to the storm-ravaged areas couldn’t be more obvious. Both the Boss and Bon Jovi hail from New Jersey, which has endured some of the greatest hardships in the catastrophe.

And Springsteen has always chronicled disaster, from decline ("Atlantic City") to terror (the post-9/11 song, "My City of Ruins").

Joel grew up on Long Island, also hard hit by the storm, which is something of a coda to his song, "The Downeaster Alexa" about the hard life on Long Island's waterfront.

WOW announces Nov. 10 deadline for Affordable Art Show

This Works of Wyoming (WOW) exhibition will showcase Wyoming artists working in varied media. Works are to be retail priced under $100. We'll be promoting this event as an alternative to the big box store's Black Friday. This was our most successful event last year for sales, and we're expecting even more this year! Back up inventory should be anticipated. Submit up to 5 pieces for consideration in the following categories: original 2-D paintings, drawings, mixed media, printmaking, digital media, & photography. 3-D work: sculpture, metal, ceramics, glass, jewelry and mixed media. All work must be new to the gallery at Works of Wyoming (not previously shown), not mass produced, and copyright adherent. All work must be suitably framed, mounted, and wired for installation. Non-glare glass is preferred for photography purposes. Jurors reserve the right to disqualify any work not suitably presented, or any work not corresponding to the entry image or community standards. Size restriction for 2-D work: Outside frame dimensions no larger than 100 total inches.

Timely topic for cultural institutions: "Disaster Preparedness and Response Training"

Are you part of a local historical museum? Or a local library? Or archive? Do you have responsibilities with collections, whether as a volunteer, staff member or board member? Is your organization prepared for a disaster? Remember... those things called storms, tornadoes, forest or grass fires, or water main breaks? What about a “household” chemical spill in your curation facility? The Wyoming Museum Training Network, with support from the Cultural Trust, will be holding a series of workshops around the state on “Disaster Preparedness and Response Planning”. These one-day training sessions on “Writing a Plan” are open to all historical and cultural institutions including museums, libraries, archives and other institutions with collections. The sessions are for staff, board members, volunteers, or docents.

• The first session is Saturday, November 24, hosted by the Laramie Plains Museum in Laramie. Additional sessions are:
• Tuesday, November 27 at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, Cheyenne;
• Friday, November 30 at the Crook County Museum & Art Gallery in Sundance;
• Tuesday, December 4 at the Converse County Public Library in Douglas; and
• Thursday, December 6 at the Goshen County Public Library in Torrington.

Saturday University makes a stop in Gillette

On November 10, From 8:30 a.m to 1:15 p.m. at the Gillette College Main Building Presentation Hall, join the Wyoming Humanities Council, the University of Wyoming, and Gillette College for Saturday University, the free one-day college education. This, the second Saturday University program offered in Gillette, includes talks by Jean Garrison, chair of Global and Area Studies at the University of Wyoming, on the future of U.S. relations with China; Phil Roberts, of the Department of History at the University of Wyoming, on the rise and fall of Wyoming's open-range cattle companies; and Ann Spehar, instructor of mathematics and economics at Gillette College, on the U.S. banking system and global financial stability. The lectures will conclude with a free luncheon and roundtable discussion. Now in its fourth year, Saturday University is a collaborative program connecting exciting University of Wyoming professors with Wyoming residents who have a desire to learn. Saturday University is sponsored by the University of Wyoming, University of Wyoming Foundation, Wyoming Humanities Council, and area businesses.
