Creative writing fellowship winners announced

The Wyoming Arts Council is pleased to announce the winners of the 2009 creative writing fellowships in fiction.

They are Doug Reitinger, Sheridan; Valerie Pexton, Laramie; and Kevin Holdsworth, Green River. Each of the writers will receive a $3,000 prize. They also will receive a $500 stipend to read their work at the Equality State Book Festival Sept. 18-20 in Casper.

Receiving honorable mentions are Robert McKee, Douglas; Bill Hoagland, Cody; and Tina Welling, Jackson.

The wyomingarts blog will feature excerpts from the work of these writers during the next few weeks.

The judge for this year’s competition was Laura Pritchett, a novelist and short story writer from Bellvue, Colorado. She will join the recipients for the annual fellowship reading on Thursday, Sept. 18, 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the Goodstein Foundation Library at Casper College. The event is free and open to the public.

This is the 21st year for the WAC’s creative writing fellowships. The competition is open to Wyoming residents who are at least 18 years old and are not enrolled full-time in a high school, college or university arts program. There is no entry fee. Applications are available each spring and the deadline is in June.
