Spend the Cheyenne weekend with Jalan Crossland and his band

Ten Sleep's Jalan Crossland will receive a 2012 Governor's Arts Award Friday, Feb. 8, at the annual GAA Awards Gala at Little America in Cheyenne. He'll be performing a few of his trademark songs to wrap up the night's festivities. If you want more, and you probably will, catch Jalan and his band the next night in concert.

The Jalan Crossland Band will perform in concert on Saturday, Feb. 9, 7 p.m., at the Terry Bison Ranch just off of the Terry Ranch Rd. exit on I-25 South, just before you get to to the Colorado border. Doors open at 6 p.m.

If you've never experienced Jalan Crossland, you're in for a jaw-dropping experience. He has won many prestigious awards, including second in the National Fingerstyle Guitar Competion and first place in the state Flatpicking Contest. He has toured multiple times with Robert Earl Keen, and toured in Europe and Australia. He has been often showcased on NPR, made multiple TV appearances and been in the New York Times. Jalan is featured in a cover story in the winter issue of Wyoming Artscapes, the quarterly magazine of the Wyoming Arts Council. 

The complexities of his combination of edgy, alt-country and traditional guitar and banjo picking seem effortless as he weaves tales of heartbreak, the sometimes-dark crevices of small town America, and most of all the joy, humor and love that can be found in every rusty-lining.

Hell froze over and his band is back together. The massively talented duo of Shaun Kelley, who plays upright and electric bass and Andy Phreaner plays trapset, wackadoo, harmonica and percussion. You want a show? Well, folks, here's something you'll never forget.

Casper College Percussion Ensemble stages "soundscapes" Nov. 15 to celebrate John Cage's centennial

As part of John Cage’s worldwide centennial celebration the Casper College Percussion Ensemble will present works by the American composer on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Aley Fine Arts Center on campus.

“The audience will have the freedom to wander through the space of the Aley Fine Arts Center and experience performances of Cage’s works in a unique and multi-layered soundscape. The works will be performed at different points during the evening, often overlapping,” said Neeraj Mehta, DMA, percussion instructor and director of the percussion ensemble.

In addition to the percussion ensemble, the event will also feature Jerome Fleg, woodwind instructor on clarinet; Kristen Lenth, vocal instructor, vocals; Holly Wendt, English instructor, spoken word; and the students of Larry Burger, sound design instructor, electronic music.

Works to be performed include “Double Music,” Living Room Music,” “A Flower,” “In a Landscape,” “Dream,” “Radio Music,” “4’33”,” “Sonata for Clarinet,” and “A Lecture on Nothing.”

The performance is free and open to the public. The Aley Fine Arts Center is located on the Casper College campus.

Singer/songwriter Bill Staines performs Oct. 15 at White Mountain Library in Rock Springs

On Monday, October 15, at 7 p.m., in the Gasson Room of the White Mountain Library in Rock Springs, singer/songwriter Bill Staines will be performing a concert.

Funded by the Wesswick Foundation, admission is free and open to the public.

Staines has been writing, recording, and touring for over forty years. In the folk tradition of Woody Guthrie and Tom Paxton, Staines writes of gold-seekers, cowboys, miners, romance, traveling, and the places along the way. Staines is one of this country’s best troubadours. He has performed extensively throughout the country from festivals to living rooms to coffeehouses, as well as on radio programs such as “Mountain Stage” and “Prairie Home Companion.” Bill’s songs have been recorded by other artists, such as Celtic Thunder, Nanci Griffith, and Jerry Jeff Walker.

Nationally recognized bluegrass band Kane's River will make a rare Wyoming appearance on Thursday, August 23, in Thermopolis. The free performance will be held in Hot Springs State Park Pavilion at 7 p.m.

The Montana-based band is a five-piece acoustic group known for its high-quality harmonies and hard-driving music that appeals to bluegrass, folk and popular music aficionados. It includes founding members John Lowell, guitar, and David Thompson, bass, both from the Bozeman area; Julie Elkins, banjo, former Montana native, now living in Raleigh, North Carolina; Ben Winship, mandolin, Victor, Idaho; and Jason Thomas, fiddle, Orlando, Florida. Sound will be provided by John Brooks.

The performance is a Wildcat Production and is part of the Arts in the Park series. It is sponsored by Hot Springs State Park, Pinnacle Bank, Centennial Energy, Morning Star Oil Company, Jim Boles/BNSF Railway and Hot Springs Greater Learning Foundation. Rabbi Joe Black in concert Aug. 5 in Cheyenne

Rockin the Reservoir July 21 at Buffalo Bill State Park

The Second Annual Rockin the Reservoir Outdoor Music Festival, featuring a variety of different bands to satisfy various musical tastes, is scheduled for July 21 from 5:30-11 p.m., at Buffalo Bill State Park in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Wyoming Division of State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails.

This family-friendly event is held at the Big Horn Basin Boat Club located at the end of Bartlett Lane, South Fork at Buffalo Bill State Park near Cody.

Sponsored by the Big Horn Basin Boat Club and Buffalo Bill State Park, the evening of music features Soldiers Springs, blues; Del Cannon, country; and Mr. Skinny, classic rock and original songs. Sound is provided by Big Wood Light and Sound and the event is produced by KcDMusic.com.

Cost of the event is $10 per car, paid at the entrance to the Boat Club, and visitors are encouraged to bring beverages and lawn chairs. Pop and water will be available for sale at the event.

Summer Exhibitions and Events at the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper

 

This weekend marks your last chance to see El Caballo: The Horse in Mexican Folk Art at the Nicolaysen. The exhibition considers the storied tradition of the horse in Mexican visual culture, spanning geography and discipline. Until July 8

Tracy Linder’s work (pictured) has been exhibited across the country and is held in a variety of museum collections. She employs agricultural materials to construct sculptures and installations that investigate the connections between land, food sources and life. Until August 5

Abbie Miller utilizes textiles and the fashion world to create sculptural forms that consider the interplay between body, materiality and form, while engaging the concepts of craft and labor. Until September 9

Greenhorse performs free concert July 11 at UW

Los Angeles-based band Greenhorse will perform a free concert from 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, on the University of Wyoming Simpson Plaza.

Although based in California, the three band members actually met in an antique music store in Wyoming. Self-described as an experimental cold-wave trio, Greenhorse has been influenced by a variety of musical styles, including classic soul, pop and even experimental psychedelia.

“Greenhorse crafts a sophisticated, cosmopolitan brand of energetic electro-pop,” says Jonathan Leonard of Leonard’s Lair. “The music retains its emotional punch while still being devilishly danceable.”

The Patti Fiasco returns to UW for June 13 concert

The Patti Fiasco will perform a free concert Wednesday, June 13, from 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. on the University of Wyoming Simpson Plaza.

With three years of touring, writing, recording and playing shows together, the group offers country twang mixed with an essence of rock. The members' Wyoming heritage influences the band's music.

"The Patti Fiasco seems destined for greatness," says Devin Morse of SCENE magazine. "On the one hand, they have all the aspects a music executive would look for in a marketable act. On the other hand, they have that sort of organic charm and grassroots style that proves it's about more than just money and popularity."
