Sean Hart's new Laramie co-op gallery is looking for artists

Painter Sean Hart has a gallery at 404 S. 2nd St. in downtown Laramie. It's called 2 Bazaar Gallery. He is opening another space. He describes his plans this way:

We own another building in downtown Laramie that has been vacant for over a year and I want to open it up to artists as a gallery based on a co-op model. There is about 5,400 square feet on two floors. The second floor has a stage, lighting and sound system and possible artist studio spaces. The university and others have done plays and events there. I am not doing this to make money. It is just that the space has been empty and I have done art shows and sales there with some success. Here is my plan as I see it now. I am open to suggestions and ideas. 

I plan to charge an 18 percent commission on sales. This is what I figure it will cost for insurance, utilities, credit card fees, maintenance etc. Each artist will be required to open the gallery on a Saturday on a rotating basis. If we have 12 artists that would be once every three months. We will set up a studio space in the front window where they can work on art pieces while they run the gallery.

In the beginning we will need to advertise. A 3x4 inch ad in the Laramie Boomerang newspaper is about $60.If 12 artists contribute, that's only five dollars each. Once a month or maybe twice a month we will have an artist reception with featured artists. 

The building is ready to begin accepting art and could be open soon with just four artists to start as early as Saturday, Oct. 20. We plan a big holiday sale.

Entrepreneur magazine is looking for artrepreneurs who make distinctive holiday gifts priced $50 or less. Here are the details:

With the holiday season just around the corner, we want to hear from the artists, craftspeople, designers and other independent merchants who make one-of-kind gifts. 

From now until Nov. 1, we invite all eligible businesses to tell us about ONE item that you sell that is the perfect gift for someone special this holiday season. 

Please tell us in 250 words or less the story behind the item: the reason you decided to create it; why it's absolutely unique; why it's different than anything you'd find in a mass-market space; whom it's suitable for; and what customers say when they buy it. The item must be priced at $50 or less. (Read all entry rules in our FAQ section.) 

On Nov. 26, we'll begin unveiling the items that editors at Entrepreneur.com have selected for inclusion in our “Indie Merchant Gift Guide.” Editors will look at both the originality and creativity of the business owner's story, and take into consideration the gift idea's value, functionality and uniqueness, as well as variety. This year, we'll reveal our favorites in 10 categories: Pets, Jewelry, Kids, Unusual/Quirky, Food/Beverage, Eco-Friendly, Beauty, Practical, Apparel, Sports.

Beet Street in Fort Collins has announced that its new Arts Incubator of the Rockies (AIR) web site is up and running. The Wyoming Arts Council has been involved in the planning stages for AIR and invite you to check out the web site -- and to become a part of this innovative effort to "bring the Intermountain West creative community together in an exciting new way." Check out www.airArtsIncubator.org.

The block of reservations for the WyAA Conference on Oct. 5-7 has been extended for 10 more days.  Our conference rate is a significant discount off the regular price, so please take advantage of it.  After Sept. 15 (which, coincidentally, is also our early bird registration deadline) the rooms will be released to the general public. Equality State Book Festival presenter Zak Pullen illustrates cover of new album by The Wiyos

Casper artist and illustrator Zak Pullen will participate in a panel discussion about children's book publishing on Saturday, Sept. 15, 10 a.m., during the Equality State Book Festival in the Casper College Gateway Building. Also on the panel are Cat Urbigkit, Karla Oceanak and Kendra Spanjer. Zak is the co-owner of the The Corridor Gallery in downtown Casper where the bookfest's author reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 14, 5:30 p.m. Zak is branching out to do cover designs for music CDs. His latest is a cover illustration for The Wiyos newly-released album, "Twist." Zak is releasing 100 CD/book combinations at $55 each. That includes a meet-and-greet jam and story session and two tickets to the Sept. 14 The Wiyos' concert at the Wolcott Galleria Theatre, 136 S. Wolcott in Casper. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Also playing will be Ten Sleep's Jalan Crossland and John Kirlin and the High Plains Drifters. A great line-up! We hate to tell you all this because we want you to attend the free bookfest events that continue that same evening at 7:30 p.m. with a reading by Wyoming Poet Laureate Pat Frolander followed by a poetry slam (with emcee George Vlastos) at 8:30. Both events are at the Metro Coffee Company downtown.

17th Street Arts Festival centerpiece of lively weekend in downtown Cheyenne

Cheyenne artist Georgia Rowswell is one of the 30 artists exhibiting at the first-ever 17th Street  Arts Festival . The title of this piece by Georgia is "Rock Fragment Landscape #1." It is 10" x 20" and is made of compressed strips of cast-off clothing and is contained in an old oak desk drawer. 

The inaugural 17th Street Art Festival is this Friday and Saturday, Aug. 17-18, in the Downtown Dineen Building's 17th Street parking area.

Friday kicks off with an artists' reception from 5-9 p.m. It is open to the public and will be catered by the Plains Hotel. There will be live music throughout the evening and a chance to talk with and purchase original art from over 30 regional artists. 

Saturday's show opens at 10 a.m. and goes till 8 p.m. All day music, arts activities and more are planned for Cheyenne's first 17th Street Art Festival.  

Tribal artists demonstrate their art forms daily at Colter Bay Visitor Center in GTNP

Each year, Grand Teton National Park sponsors a program for visiting American Indian artists at the Colter Bay Visitor Center. For the past 37 years, artists from diverse tribes have demonstrated their traditional and contemporary art forms, providing visitors a chance to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of American Indian art and culture.

Participating artists represent tribes from across the United States. Demonstrated art forms include painting, weaving, pottery, beadwork, and musical instruments. Guest artists exhibit daily from Monday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., adjacent to the Grand Teton Association bookstore. Artists also offer their finished items for purchase. “Between Heart and Place,” An Artist Explores Homeland in Collection of New Landscape Paintings

Trio Fine Art Gallery, 545 N. Cache Avenue, Jackson, will host an exhibition of the works of Kathryn Mapes Turner August 1-18. Artist Reception will be held on August 9, 5-8 p.m., Turner will lead a conversation on creativity as it relates to the landscape at 6:30 p.m. FREE and open to the public. Gallery hours Wednesday-Saturday, noon-6 p.m.

About the artist and her work:

Turner was born into a fourth generation ranching family in Jackson Hole. As a teen, Turner had the opportunity to study with acclaimed landscape painters and then continued her art education in such celebrated places as Italy, Mexico and Washington DC. The artist has since returned to her native Wyoming, but remains committed to her evolution as an artist beyond the sphere of her youth. Kathryn’s hard work has yielded both local accolades and national recognition. Last fall, her painting, “Siena” won the “Best in Show” at the American Impressionist Society. Her work is also featured in celebrated national exhibitions such as Birds in Art at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum and Western Visions at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Southwest Art Magazine once distinguished Turner among the “Artists to Watch,” predicting what has indeed become a most promising career.

Beet Street unveils Arts Incubator of the Rockies curriculum design at April 25 public meeting

The Wyoming Arts Council is one of the state arts agencies in the West participating in the Arts Incubator of the Rockies (AIR) project launched last year by Beet Street in Fort Collins, Colo. Here's a press release from Beet Street about the next phase of AIR:

The Arts Incubator of the Rockies (AIR) is proud to announce a public unveiling of the AIR Curriculum Design that will highlight the hard work, time, and creativity that has been put into place over the past three months of developing the core curriculum. On Wednesday, April 25th, AIR will be hosting an "Unveiling of Curriculum Design" from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, Canyon West room.

The Arts Incubator of the Rockies (AIR) is an ambitious initiative of Beet Street, created in partnership with the City of Fort Collins Cultural Services Department, and Colorado State University (CSU) School of the Arts. AIR is a regional arts incubator that serves 10 states and more than 280,000 artists and creatives in the Intermountain West. Based in Fort Collins, AIR is designed to serve both the local and regional cultural workforce by providing professional development classes, entrepreneurial and business training and other skills-based activities through distance learning, internships, collaborations and resource sharing. AIR serves all creative and community members who want to shift the paradigms about art, money, value, and community.
