"This year's Opportunity Quilt is called "Belize." It is approximately 86"x107". The top is bright fabrics with black background. The blocks were sewn by guild members and the top was then pieced by CHQ member Carole Gardner. It was machine quilted by Carole Gardner in a tight stippling in the black area and has an 80/20 blend batting. Tickets for an opportunity to take this beautiful quilt home may be purchased for $1.00 from any member of Cheyenne Heritage Quilters or at the 2011 Quilt Show."

"Quilting on the Green" June 3-5 in Green River

The 20th anniversary of "Quilting on the Green" will be held from Thursday, June 3, to Saturday, June 5. Thursday hours are 6:30-8:30 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. At the Expedition Island Pavillion in Green River. Admission is $2.

Trunk show will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. $15 admission.

Wild West Quilt Fest Feb. 6-7 in Riverton

Wyoming Star Quilt Guild presents the 8th annual Wild West Quilt Fest at Aspen Park Elementrary School, 1620 E. Sunset in Riverton on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 6-7. Times: Saturday 1-7 p.m.; Sunday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Event includes vendor mall, scissor sharpening, an array of beautiful quilts, silent auction tables. Alzquilt art pieces to be donated to the Alzheimers Foundation for reseach.

The greening of Wheatland Aug. 20-22

From a press release:

Wheatland is gearing up for its first-ever Green Festival to be held Aug. 20-22. The Green Festival will feature guest speakers from various businesses who will discuss wind energy, clean coal and much more. In addition to the speakers, the festival will feature hands-on exhibits designed to educate all ages about the value of taking care of the environment.

Participating vendors will include local growers, artisans, crafters, nursery and greenhouse operators and more. In addition, there will be a quilt show, bake sales, a farmers’ market, garden walks, pet parades and a square dance.

According to organizer Dan Brecht, director of the Platte County Economic Development Corp., there is still plenty of room for anyone who wants to set up a booth or exhibit their wares.

All events will be held in downtown Wheatland, at Lewis City Park and the Wheatland High School Auditiorium. Anyone interested in participating may contact Brecht at 307-322-4232.

The event is free to both vendors and the public, and Brecht is hoping that visitors will come from throughout the region to enjoy the day.

Fiber artist Phillippa Lack plans busy summer

Wyomingingarts ran into Cheyenne fabric artist Phillippa Lack this week. She's been busy -- and that will continue through the summer. Here are some highlights:

She was an invited artist at the Billings, Mont., quilt festival earlier this year.

One art quilt, "Somewhat Off Kilter" was accepted into Studio Art Quilt Associates' "Points of View" national show, debuting at the Long Beach Quilt Festival in July.

Her art quilt "Botanica II" accepted into Front Range Contemporary Quilters' "Colors of Life"
national show, Carnegie Arts Center, Alliance, Nebraska, May 19 through June 29, 2009.

Two fiber art pieces, "Chrysalis" and "Blue Mountain, Black River" accepted into Front Range Contemporary Quilters show "Connecting Threads" at the Longmont Museum, Colo., in
the fall. More later on this exhibit.

Cheyenne Quilter's Guild Show

The Cheyenne Civic Center's Quilt Show was able to go forward, despite the flood damage the Center received Tuesday night from a storm that dumped 2.5 inches on Cheyenne in just 30 minutes. Much needed moisture, but the Center's basement had to be pumped out and water rose to the main stage level.

There were 100-plus quilts displayed over this past weekend, all imaginative, with stories to accompany their design and execution. All kinds of techniques -- windowpane, applique, beading and fabric emblishments and manipulating, hand and machine quilting -- left show attendees oohing and aahing. White gloves were handed out for touching, and there were an assortment of vendors with quilt kits, ribbons and lace embellishments, packets of quilt squares and books of all kinds to purchase.

Quilts these days are works of art, documenting a time and place in the quilters' lives. Although many are still functional as blankets, many are now hung on the wall as interpretive art. Included in the show were a few vintage quilts.

The Cheyenne Quilter's Guild also takes its trunk show around to schools and interested organizations to display quilts and talk about the art of quilting.
