Company of Thieves in concert at UW Aug. 22

Chicago band Company of Thieves will perform at the University of Wyoming's annual President's Barbecue Monday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m.  Free food will be served to all in attendance starting at 5 p.m.

An indie rock band, Company of Thieves has released two albums, "Ordinary Riches" in 2009 and their newest album "Running from a Gamble" this year. "Ordinary Riches" debuted at No. 5 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. The band won the 2007 New York Songwriters Circle contest for its song, "Oscar Wilde."

"Company of Thieves bring in triumphant, catchy music with their own energy and soul, making for a deeply energetic sound that can turn from sweet to intense on a whim," according to a review. "Using a mix of rock and pop delivered with style and soul, propelled by front woman Genevieve Schatz's powerful voice and her band's inventive guitar and drum work."

The band has toured with such groups as Annuals, OK Go and The Hold Steady, and has performed at Lollapalooza, Last Call with Carson Daly and Live from Daryl's House.

WYO Photo of the Week: Larry Friedman

Many of you remember Larry Friedman's Wyoming photos, notably the ones shot around the Flaming Gorge in Sweetwater County. He has an amazing ability to catch lightning in mid-strike during summer storms. Larry moved from Green River to the Chicago area last year but he hasn't lost his Wyoming touch. This recent one shows cattle grazing near Flaming Gorge. The man knows his bovines -- he's also a veterinarian. This photo is 20x30 inches.

Blue Sky Project teams artists & teens

Blue Sky Project invites professional artists and McHenry County, Ill., teens to create new works of contemporary art. This eight-week Artist in Residence Program during summer 2008 hosts artists who have a demonstrated commitment to innovation and exploration and are interested in collaborating with fellow artists and young people as a means of creating new works. In support of artistic experimentation and collaboration, we organize small groups of local teens eager to work with a professional artist, provide fees and materials to artists, and employ our facilities and staff to address the creative needs of our Blue Sky Project teams.

Postmark deadline for artists is Feb. 4, 2008.
