Call for applications: Rosemary Kennedy Internship Initiative

The 2013 Rosemary Kennedy Internship Initiative is now open and accepting applications from qualified organizations. This initiative provides funding of up to $25,000 to arts organizations, from across the country, to initiate internship and apprenticeship programs for youth with disabilities that provide pre-professional skill development in the fields of arts, arts management and arts education.

Application deadline is January 7, 2013.

Mondo Guerra of "Project Runway All Stars" to speak March 23 at UW

"Project Runway All Stars" finalist and season eight runner-up Mondo Guerra will speak Friday, March 23, at 7 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Union Ballroom.

He also will guest judge for "The Condom Couture" fashion show that begins at 9 p.m. Friday in the Wyoming Union Ballroom. Friday Night Fever and FACE AIDS sponsor the program to bring awareness to issues of sexual health and HIV/AIDS in a relaxed and entertaining atmosphere.

"UW student designers have created condom-inspired designs and will take the runway to win first-place and a cash prize," says Kat Nicola, Friday Night Fever marketing chair.

"Recognized for his impeccable construction and styling, masterful mix of prints and fearless use of color, Mondo will speak about his experience on ‘Project Runway,'" Nicola adds.

After Mondo emotionally disclosed on "Project Runway" that he is HIV-positive, he became a dedicated advocate for HIV/AIDs awareness. He and fellow "Project Runway" alumnus Jack Mackenroth have partnered with pharmaceuticals company Merck for the HIV and AIDS education campaign "Living Positive by Design."

In addition to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and FACE AIDS, the event will also raise funds for Partners in Health, an internationally recognized health care provider.

Presentation on historic ranch architecture Feb. 15 at Wyoming State Museum

A presentation focusing on the LX Bar Ranch in northern Wyoming will be held at the Wyoming State Museum Multi-Purpose Room at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 15.


The original ranch owned by Senator John B. Kendrick is still intact and features several large stone structures built by Swedish stonemasons in 1910. The ranch is located along the Powder River and near the Montana State Line.


The slide presentation will be conducted by Ken Tobin and Megin Rux of Tobin and Associates, a local architectural firm.
            
The ranch is considered to feature some of the nicest ranch architecture in the state. The current owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, would like to donate the site to the State of Wyoming. Call for proposals: City of Moscow, Idaho

Call for proposals for the Wren Welcome Garden

The City of Moscow, Idaho is requesting applications from professional artists who can demonstrate qualifications for producing outdoor public art. Eligibility is open to artists, architects and design teams living in Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana and Wyoming. From this pre-qualified pool, three semi-finalists will be paid $500 each to prepare detailed site-specific proposals for the design, fabrication and installation of a permanent outdoor sculpture in a city park in September 2012. Budget: $35,000. RFQ deadline: September 9, 2011.

Justin Richards' unique furniture featured at Art Design & Dine June 9

Cheyenne artist Justin Richards will display his unique furniture at Glen Garrett's architectural studio and offices in downtown Cheyenne. The exhibit debuts during Art Design & Dine from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, in various locales around central Cheyenne.

Justin Richards is a furniture designer who recently completed an 8 week residency at Anderson Ranch in Colorado.

Justin had this to say about his work: "As a student of architecture and a practitioner of furniture design, I blur any distinction that exists between the two trades. My recent work invokes a hybrid notion of “designed intervention” -- I approach architecture from a level of detail found in furniture design, and I design furniture with consideration for its architectural impact. I am as immersed in fabrication as I am in design, and I constantly move between the two as I identify problems and pursue solutions."

Reception tonight for NWC's Juried Student Art & Design Exhibit

A reception will be held on Tuesday, April 19 (today!), 7:30-9 p.m., for the annual Juried Student Art & Design Exhibit at the Northwest Gallery in Northwest College’s Cabre Building. Free and open to the public. Refreshments served.

The exhibit will be on display through May 14. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m., M-F, and 7-9 p.m. on Thursdays.

Cody High Style prepares for Rendezvous Royale

In the 2009 Cody High Syle fashion category, Tres Outlaws Boots won the Designer's Choice award.

The Buffalo Bill Historical Center joins artisans and designers who celebrate the spirit of the American West through western decorative arts in Cody High Style: Designing the West.

This year’s exhibition, held in conjunction with the city-wide Rendezvous Royale, is on view September 22 – 25 in the breezeway of the Historical Center’s Cody Firearms Museum. Forty craftsmen display everything from desks and couches to lamps and saddlebags—all with a distinctive western flair. The show is free to the public.

Cody High Style kicks off with the popular “Building Rustic Furniture” two-day workshop on Monday and Tuesday, September 20 – 21, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Master craftsman John Gallis of Norseman Designs West presents this hands-on workshop in his studio where participants learn the basics of woodworking and take home their own handmade projects. All levels of experience are welcome, and since space is limited, registrations are now being accepted. The cost is $300 and includes materials and lunch.

Marge Taylor of Leather Legends invites leather aficionados to make their own leather, fringed vests in her workshop on Tuesday, September 21, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Historical Center. The cost is $100 and includes materials and lunch. All levels of experience are welcome, and registrations are now being accepted as space is limited.

This year’s Cody High Style tour—Thursday, September 23, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.—highlights historic log cabins in the area, beginning with the Joseph Henry Sharp cabin, Absarokee Hut, at the Historical Center. Then, participants travel to several historic homestead cabins around Meeteetse, Wyoming, including the famous Pitchfork Ranch. Space is limited, and registrations are now being accepted. The cost for the guided tour is $100 and includes bus travel, lunch, and guide.

Along with its popular style show, Cody High Style also has several seminars and roundtable discussions that are free to the public:

Sept. 22, 2 p.m.: “Why would a magazine want to do a story on me?” Cowgirl Magazine editor-in-chief, Callan Loessberg.

Sept. 23, 10 a.m.: “Roundtable: Influences of Mastered Style” (historic styles from Molesworth to Roycroft).

UW Art Museum on YouTube: "Dufy on Design"

The University of Wyoming Art Museum has added a new video to its uwartmuseum channel on YouTube. Dufy on Design is a walk through the exhibition, Dufy on Design: The Fabric Designs of Raoul Dufy.

Raoul Dufy (French, 1877-1953) has been recognized for his work as a Fauvist painter, known for bold color and strong lines. Dufy was also one of the great innovators of twentieth century textile design, an aspect of his work that has been relatively unknown. Dufy by Design: The Fabric Designs of Raoul Dufy, at the University of Wyoming Art Museum through August 21, 2010, explores Dufy’s collaborations with Parisian couture fashion designer Paul Poiret and the leading French silk manufacturer Bianchini-Frier. 100 original silk fabrics and fabric designs and thirteen dresses designed by Mongi Guibane and Christian LaCroix using Dufy fabric designs are included in the exhibit.

Work by Wilson glass artist Laurie Thal given as White House gift

Wilson glassblower/glass artist and two-time Wyoming Arts Council visual arts fellowship winner Laurie Thal has a friend at the White House. Laurie was exhibiting her work last November at the Washington, D.C., craft show when the State Department's Tracy Bernstein stopped to admire the work. She asked if Laurie had something with a peacock on it and Laurie pulled from a box the piece shown above. The peacock was designed by Laurie's partner, Lia Kass. The State Department's Senior Gift Officer Liza Ballantine saw the bowl and bought it. President and Mrs. Obama gave the bowl as a gift to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife during their Nov. 24 White House visit. In 1997, Laurie also made a glass ornament for the White House Christmas Tree for Bill and Hillary Clinton. Several of her pieces are on display at the Wyoming Governor's Residence in Cheyenne. David Carson exhibit at Gallery 211

An exhibition by renowned graphic designer David Carson can be seen through Sunday, Dec. 20, at the University of Wyoming art department's downtown gallery, Gallery 211, located at 211 S. 1st Street, Laramie.

A reception for Carson will be held will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, from 7-9 p.m. The exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public.

The exhibition will feature paintings and photographs Carson has made since relocating to Wyoming, plus works by students in two classes he teaches. Gallery 211 is open Fridays from 3-7 p.m. and Saturdays from noon-4 p.m.

Carson's clients include MTV, Quicksilver, Giorgio Armani, Nine Inch Nails and Ray Ban. He is also the chief designer for David Carson Design, Inc. with offices in Del Mar, Calif., and Zurich, Switzerland.

Interior West: The Craft and Style of Thomas Molesworth

Wally Reber of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center will present “Interior West: The Craft and Style of Thomas Molesworth,” at 7 p.m., October 6 at the Wyoming State Museum in Cheyenne.
Presented in conjunction with the State Museum’s current exhibit, “Molesworth: Selections from the Permanent Collection,” Reber will present an illustrated presentation on the rustic western furniture maker.
Molesworth owned and operated the Shoshone Furniture Company in Cody from 1931 to 1961. For thirty years, Molesworth created western furniture for ranches and hotels throughout the United States including the famous Ranch A, near Beulah, Wyoming; Eisenhower's Den; and the Rockefeller Ranch. It is said that he single-handedly popularized "cowboy furniture" or the western style of furniture design.
Following Reber's talk, guests will be invited to view the exhibit which is on display through October 24.
