City of Missoula sends out call for proposals for public art project

The City of Missoula (Mont.) Public Art Committee invites artists in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington and Oregon to submit a design proposal for a public art piece at Missoula's new Park Place Parking Structure. The project goal is to initiate the visual landmark linking -- if not drawing -- individuals from the downtown community to Missoula's vibrant riverfront system. The commission challenges artists to reflect on the diversity of the Missoula community, and integrate and enhance the site and public space. Deadline for proposals is May 30. Call for proposals: City of Ketchum, Idaho, public art project

The City of Ketchum’s Ketchum Arts Commission (KAC) invites artists to apply for a public art project for vinyl images of original art to be applied (wrapped) on selected utility boxes located throughout the city. The intention of the project is to use utility boxes as canvases to further enliven the city with art.

Wyoming Humanities Council seeks programs for forum

The Wyoming Humanities Council seeks programs for the Humanities Forum. The forum is a roster of independent contractors who travel throughout Wyoming, speaking on humanities-centered topics.  The format of presentations varies, but they should be 30 to 45 minutes long, followed by focused audience discussions.  The Wyoming Humanities Council pays a $150 honorarium for each presentation, as well as mileage, lodging, and per diem expenses. 

The council is especially interested in presentations related to the upcoming Wyoming tour of “Key Ingredients: America by Food,” a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit about food and foodways.

Call for proposals: Durango, Colo., public art project

The City of Durango invites interested artists or groups of artist to submit qualifications and artwork proposals for original three-dimensional artwork to be installed in the roundabout at the intersection of Florida Road and Riverview Drive (in the center of the roundabout). The purpose of this public art installation is to commemorate the legacy of cycling in Durango, including the city's recent selection as the overall start city for the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge, which will commence on August 20, 2012. Call for applications: Lander Art Center

The Lander Art Center has a new application process for professional and emerging artists to apply for an exhibition in the gallery space.

Exhibitions are scheduled about a year in advance and applications are accepted year-round.

Applications will be reviewed by the Lander Art Center Exhibition Committee and selected based on quality, variety of medium, interest, and gallery space and time criteria.

The application requirements consist of an artist biography, exhibition proposal, artist statement, 10 digital images, an itemized image list, resume, and application fee.

Call for proposals: Fort Collins Linden Street Pocket Park Public Art Project

The City of Fort Collins, Colorado, Art in Public Places Program is seeking to commission an artist/team to work on the Linden Street Pocket Park Project.  The artist will collaborate with the project team in developing the overall park design and to develop a site-specific art component(s) incorporated into the pocket park which will engage the community, complement the existing Linden St. Streetscape Project, integrate into the planned urban design of the River District area, and have an educational component. The Linden Street Pocket Park is near the historic site of Camp Collins in Fort Collins, Colorado.

This project is open to all professional Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico artists/artist teams, legally residing in and authorized to work in the United States. Artist must be able to work effectively and collaboratively with the project’s design team selected by the City of Fort Collins. The total contract amount for all applicable expenses, which includes all fees for consulting with the design team, the design, execution, transportation, site preparation, and installation of all artwork selected as well as a project plaque, shall be an approximate amount up to $125,000.  This figure will also include any travel expenses.

Call for proposals: Rapid City Main Street Square On-site Sculpture Commission

The Rapid City Arts Council (RCAC) along with Destination Rapid City (DRC) announce an international call for artists interested in an on-site commission to sculpt the 21 granite boulders at Main Street Square in downtown Rapid City, S.D. 

Mary Maxon, Curator for the Rapid City Arts Council announced the call on January 10, 2012 stating that “this is an incredible opportunity for an artist, or team of artists, to create an important work of art which adds to the cultural and natural history of the region. Rapid City is uniquely located between the northern Great Plains, Badlands, and Black Hills. Our area is home to some of the most beautiful and inspiring sculptures.  We are surrounded by natural works of art like Cathedral Spires, Jewel Cave, Harney Peak, Bear Butte and Devils Tower.  We are also the home of infamous and monumental, manmade sculptures at Mt. Rushmore National Memorial and Crazy Horse Memorial.” 

The sculpture project is expected to be completed on-site by the artist(s) during the next 3-5 years.

Patrick Wyss of Wyss Associates, the local firm selected to manage the sculpture project, expects interest from a wide range of talented artists for this large public art project. “Up to two million dollars in private donations is already in place to attract the right sculptor or team to complete this major work of art which will become a centerpiece for our community and the region.” 

Notice of this Call for Artists has been issued today in numerous local, national and international publications. The selection process will take place over the next nine months. Interested artists are asked to submit their letters of interest, general background and experience information by April 17, 2012.  Semifinalists will be invited to submit more detailed proposals by July 15, 2012.  Finalists will be invited and reimbursed for two on-site visits and a detailed presentation of their vision for the Main Street Square Sculptures. This will occur from August 1 through November 1, 2012. The RCAC will recommend the preferred artist to Destination Rapid City in November, 2012.

Call for proposals: Teton County Library public art project

The Board of the Teton County Library announces a request for qualifications for the fabrication and installation of a site-specific work for the library lobby. Qualifications are due on Feb. 15 2012. Three artists will be selected to visit the site, interview with the Selection Panel and receive a stipend to prepare a conceptual design. From the group of finalists, one artist will be awarded $65,000 to create and install a new work in November 2012, depending on the construction schedule and available funds.

“Artwork for the entryway will be intellectually stimulating -- like a good book -- and invite various levels of understanding on the part of the many different patrons. The artwork will suggest that you discover something new every time you visit the library.”

Call for proposals: Beet Street's Arts Incubator of the Rockies project

Beet Street of Fort Collins, Colorado, a registered 501c(3) nonprofit, is accepting proposals to develop professional development curricula for the Arts Incubator of the Rockies, AIR, the regional arts incubator being launched by Beet Street. This will be a concept to completion project that will include significant public comment and committee interaction. This project is funded, in part, by a National Endowment for the Arts Our Town grant. Federal guidelines are being followed to ensure that this RFP process provides a fair evaluation for all candidates and to provide the candidates with the evaluation criteria against which they will be judged.

Beet Street will be hiring a lead consultant to help design the educational program and facilitate work with additional consultants, staff and stakeholders. In addition to serving as a project manager, the candidate will be expected to deliver curriculum and materials for the program. The candidate could be considered for writing and editing the entire curriculum or, if additional writers are needed to complete the project on time, candidate could provide high level editing in addition to writing.

Candidate should have experience with curriculum development for adult learners, the arts, strong writing and facilitation skills, and experience working with a volunteer committee. Preference will be given to local small, women-owned, and/or minority-owned businesses.

The project will begin in January 2012. Heavy conceptual work would be done in January and February. Writing of the actual class materials would begin in March. Writing/materials will be reviewed by staff and volunteer committee through May. July pilot program of the full curricula is desired. First classes should be ready to implement for fall 2012.

DEADLINE REMINDER: Artist Portfolios for new Southeast WY Welcome Center due Sept. 2

The deadline for Art in Public Buildings artists’ portfolio submissions for the new Southeast Wyoming Welcome Center in Cheyenne is fast approaching. Portfolio submissions must be postmarked by September 2, for consideration.

The dramatic new Welcome Center is scheduled to open in mid-2012. Construction has begun along I-25 at mile marker 4.9 just north of the Colorado/Wyoming border. The new facility references historic tourism in the region as it is sited along the axis of the early Park-to-Park highway once connecting Mesa Verde, Rocky Mountain and Yellowstone National Parks.

In addition to serving as an information resource and introduction to the state, the facility also provides a workplace and headquarters for the Wyoming Office of Tourism staff. Their mission is to promote and facilitate increased traffic to and within the State of Wyoming, by residents and non-residents alike.

The building’s lobby –- positioned along the axis of the former Park-to-Park road – links the south and north entries and provides the main public access area. A connecting reception area houses interactive information stations for visitors while an interpretive hall provides an introduction to Wyoming’s rich story through a series of exhibition stations. The colorful interpretive galleries link to the glass-enclosed prow of the structure overlooking the prairie environment, and providing a sweeping view of the western vista.

The committee for the Art in Public Buildings Project has identified two areas as potential sites for public accessible art installations. One is an exterior plaza linking the structure to the primary visitor drop-off zone and parking lot. The second is a series of three interior steel doors linking the reception area and main corridor. Artwork for either location must be durable, structurally sound, secure and easy to maintain. Both 2-D and 3-D works are encouraged. The call for entries and additional project information is available through the Wyoming Arts Council website at http://wyoarts.state.wy.us/.

Application for this project will be a two-phase process. Initially, artists are encouraged to submit a defined portfolio of work along with support documentation that includes a short narrative of potential design concepts and mediums. Following review, the committee will invite select artists to develop site-specific proposals to be reviewed in December 2011.

The Wyoming Arts Council is responsible for the implementation of the 1% for Art in Public Buildings legislation for the State of Wyoming.

The U.S. State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) announces an open competition for a cooperative agreement to administer the American Film Showcase's Contemporary Voices in Documentary and Fiction Film program. The American Film Showcase seeks to bring award-winning independent American documentaries and narrative films to audiences around the world to offer contemporary new insights into American life and culture, as well as issues affecting democratic societies. The films and their filmmakers will be showcased at international venues, including U.S. Embassy-organized events and/or international documentary and feature film festivals. This program will provide for travel by documentary and feature filmmakers and film experts in conjunction with public presentation of the films overseas. Participating filmmakers and film experts will be expected to conduct or participate in master classes, workshops, lectures and other outreach activities designed for a variety of audiences, with a focus on younger and underserved audiences. The classes are expected to include filmmaking workshops and training in digital technology, emergent media, and creative use of social media. The Showcase also will provide for follow-up programming that could include return visits overseas by American filmmakers or visits by young foreign filmmakers to the United States.

Through this solicitation, ECA seeks an organization to identify and select a collection of contemporary American documentary and narrative films that offer a broad overview of the best in current American independent filmmaking. The films should demonstrate high artistic quality, illustrate diverse viewpoints, address a variety of social issues, and reflect the creativity inherent in an open, democratic society. Documentaries are the priority focus of the American Film Showcase. They should address important and compelling themes and represent more than half of the films in the Showcase, with the remainder being narrative/fiction films. The Showcase also should include a small collection of animated shorts.

U.S. public and non-profit organizations meeting the provisions described in Internal Revenue code section 26 USC 501 (c) (3) may submit proposals for the American Film Showcase. For this competition, all applicants must demonstrate sufficient experience successfully exhibiting, distributing, or otherwise promoting American documentaries and narrative films. They also should demonstrate extensive knowledge of independent filmmaking -- especially the documentary field -- both in the U.S. and overseas.

The Pinedale Fine Arts Council (PFAC) announces a call for entries for the mural project to be located on the west end of the Pinedale Properties Building at 431 W. Pine St. PFAC is soliciting design ideas from the public. Anyone living in Sublette County is eligible. No mural experience is necessary. The PFAC Visual Arts Committee (VAC) will choose the final design concept. The Pedestrian Underpass connects the Jackson Hole Community Pathway’s System North Highway 89 Pathway to the National Museum of Wildlife Art. The Underpass acts as a gateway to the Walter Hood designed sculpture trail which is scheduled for construction this summer. This section of Pathway will connect the Town of Jackson to Grand Teton National Park and runs parallel to the National Elk Refuge.
