Call for entries: Gallery 110 in Seattle

Help Gallery 110 in Seattle celebrate its 10th year Feb. 2-25, 2012, with a juried exhibition of national and international artworks.

This annual exhibition showcases work by emerging and established artists. Gallery 110’s location and reputation offer artists access to Seattle’s Pioneer Square gallery district and First Thursday Art Walk. Works in two and three dimensions are welcome.

JUROR: Nora Atkinson, Curator at the Bellevue Arts Museum.

A Seattle native, Nora Atkinson completed her BFA in Photography and Art History at the University of Washington in 2002, followed by an MA in Museology in 2006. Beginning in 2006 as Exhibitions Curator of Bellevue Arts Museum, she has been the local curator of more than 14 traveling exhibitions in five years. Starting in 2010 as Curator, she organized such exhibitions as The Book Borrowers: Contemporary Artists Transforming the Book, Lisa Gralnick: The Gold Standard, and the current exhibition,Cathy McClure: Midway. Her writing and photography have been featured in numerous museum publications, including Mandy Greer: Dare alla Luce,Tip Toland: Melt, and Lisa Gralnick: The Gold Standard, among others.
AWARDS: Selected works will be displayed at the gallery for the month of February.  From exhibited works the juror will award first and second prize winners $300 and $200 respectively.

ELIGIBILITY: This international juried show is open to artists over 18 years of age. Art work may be in any two or three dimensional media and must be original works of art by the artist submitting the entry. Works requiring electrical outlets (e.g. video, neon, sound) are not eligible. Deadline for entry: Nov. 2, 2011, 5 p.m.

New library card makes debut at March 18 artist reception at Rawlins Main Street Gallery

"Green River Cliffs Wyoming" by Thomas Moran acquired by National Gallery of Art in D.C.

The National Gallery of Art in Washington has acquired the celebrated landscape painting "Green River Cliffs, Wyoming" by 19th-century American artist Thomas Moran.

The painting goes on view Friday and will remain in a special installation through June. It is a gift of collector Vern Milligan and his two children.

"Green River" was featured in a 1997 retrospective of Moran's work at the gallery. Milligan purchased the painting at auction in 1994 for $2.7 million.

Gallery Director Earl A. Powell III says the museum was lacking a grand, panoramic view of the American West.

Moran completed the work 10 years after his first trip west in 1871. His work has been increasing in value in recent years. A 1878 Moran piece sold for $17.7 million in 2008.

UW Art Museum holds Feb. 25 gallery walk-through for Etsuko Ichikawa exhibit

UW faculty members conduct gallery walk-through March 7 for show at UW Art Museum

Faculty members will discuss their art work during a gallery walk-through at 6 p.m. Monday, March 7, at the University of Wyoming Art Museum in Laramie.

Presented every three years, the UW Art Department Faculty Exhibition includes installation, painting, printmaking, graphic design, sculpture, small metals and drawings.

This year's exhibition includes work by Nathan Abel, Diana Baumbach, Ashley Hope Carlisle, Leah Hardy, Margaret Hayden, Ricki Klages, David Jones, Patrick Kikut, Jessica Perry, Mark Ritchie, Doug Russell, Shelby Shadwell and Jenny Venn.

The walk-though will be followed at 7 p.m. by a faculty 20:20 event, which allows UW and Laramie County Community College faculty members from any discipline to show 20 slides of their work for 20 seconds each.

The walk-through and 20:20 event are both free and open to the public.

"Imagine learning from the masters" is a guiding principle of the UW Art Museum's programs. Located in the Centennial Complex at 2111 Willett Dr. in Laramie, the museum is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free.

ARTIST STATEMENT 

This series of watercolor/gouache portraits was inspired by images from my family photo 

album. All of the children pictured would now be 50 to 70 years old. They are my family, myself, 

friends, and classmates, and I am looking back at them across time.

Children are very conscious of the adult gaze. In the photos, I see children looking back at adult 

authority. How they respond to the adult “in charge” will shape their entire lives, and says a lot 

about who they are or yearn to be. It will stay with them into adulthood. 

The process of painting portraits from the photographs forces me to look closely and intimately 

at the expressions and body language of these children. Re-interpreting the image through 

watercolor, a child’s art material, helps me bring out what I know is under the surface.

The children tried to be invisible as the men entered their house, depositing in the front parlor the coffin carrying their uncle Jacoby. They knew this was the beginning of the end.

"Crossed Up" features Jalan Crossland and Dang Ol' Boys Oct. 8 in Casper

The Corridor Gallery in Casper announces “Crossed Up," a concert featuring some of the region’s most talented and entertaining musicians for a single evening show. Wyoming native Jalan Crossland is traveling to Casper from his home town of Ten Sleep to play a solo set following hometown guests Dang Ol’ Boys (shown in photo). To finish the evening, Jalan and the Dang Ol’ Boys will be joining together for a grassroots finale set bringing a backyard feel to the event. The show will be on Friday, October 8, at the Wolcott Galleria Theatre in downtown Casper starting at 8 p.m. with the doors opening at 7 p.m.

Crossland's primary tool of musical expression has always been the guitar. In 1997, Jalan placed 2nd at the Winfield, Kansas, National Fingerstyle Guitar competition, and 1st in the state flatpicking contest of his Wyoming home. These added to dozens of regional championship awards, attest that his playing is (according to the Rapid City Weekly News) "...so dexterous that when he stops at the end of a song, you realize you forgot to breathe."

The Dang Ol’ Boys are an 8-piece band comprised of Ben Derby on fiddle, Bob Marnell playing lead Guitar, Brendan Lamb on guitar, banjo and vocals, Dennis Lamb on mandolin, Erick Parks behind the drum kit, Sean Ingledew delivering lead vocals and harps, Tim Lamb on guitar and Travis Johnson behind the stand-up bass. The Dang Ol’ Boys popularity has exploded locally due to their high-energy technical fusion of bluegrass, alt-country and punk rock roots.

Tickets will be available for the event starting on Monday, September 13, at The Corridor Gallery, Sonic Rainbow CDs and Wind City Books. General Admission tickets will cost $20 and balcony seating will be $30. Only 400 tickets are available, so patrons are encouraged to act fast. The show is all ages and beer will be sold over the bar for age verified attendants.

Art, Design & Dine Art Walk on Aug. 12, 5-8 p.m.

Art, Design and Dine Art Walk takes place on Thursday, Aug. 12, 5-8 p.m., at 11 downtown Cheyenne businesses. They include the Link Gallery. Here's what's happening there:

This Thursday, the Link Gallery features Native American Tom Wadena, an Omaha Indian,who has executed not only a beautiful red and white beaded riding saddle, complete with halter cover and breastplate but also beautiful beaded vests. We also feature the works of the Native American artists represented by the Nightwalker Trading Post. These works include children's moccasins made of exquisitely executed pine cone needles painted in vivid reds and blues, including one pair that is for ceremonial use. We also have a pair of antique moccasins over 110 years old and moccasins recently executed in smoked, brain tanned skin.

In addition we will be featuring the limited edition Japanese block prints of R.C. Gorman, noted Native American Artist, as well as framed wood carved native images with arrow head collections by Vernon Nightwalker. We also will feature beautifully beaded chockers and berets of lovely red, white and blue, rawhide Eagle Shields and an authentic War Shirt consisting of brain tanned skin, colorful bead work and horse hair. Also we will have a brilliantly beaded rifle sheath with buckskin braiding, a perfect match to take along with the saddle.

Also we will have a silver with gold Concho belt, a silver and turquoise Concho belt and a set of silver bolo tie with silver and turquoise steer head belt buckle. We also have acquired for exhibit a beautiful bear rug and a full size authentic buffalo robe.

Casper native Luke Whitlatch is making the trek from his current city of Los Angeles for the debut Casper showing of his artwork at the Corridor Gallery. The press and public are invited to attend the free opening reception on Friday, August 13, starting at 7 p.m. Luke will be present during the opening and presenting an artist’s talk the following day, Saturday August 14, at 2 p.m. The artist’s talk is also a free event to the press and public. Luke’s artwork will only be on display through Sunday, August 15, during business hours.

Luke creates intricate and colorful works of art on linen or canvas by bleeding aniline die initially and finishing with oil and acrylic paint. Luke’s works are then stretched onto handmade dimensional frames that lend shape to the work. Every aspect of this artwork is unique and visually stimulating.

“Ghost in the Cargo Van” Artist’s Statement

For a painting to be truly new it must be responsible for its own history, be it theoretical, technical or physical. “Ghost in the Cargo Van,” is a show about the things that you thought you saw. These images were made to pay homage to the past while rejuvenating historical ideas.

Abstract images rely on the viewer to project their personal opinions and experiences onto the images. Many legends and myths were created by this same phenomenon. Time aged mental recollections can lead to a person changing what they actually saw, into something completely different. When presented with limited amounts of recognizable imagery the viewer can create their own story based on shapes colors lines and past references.

Much is based on emotional recollection while making this work. These paintings are mostly based on personal experiences and emotional information. Modernist ideas of form and color give way to intuition. Specific experiences as well as short moments in time are not represented solely by visual imagery. A memory may be based on a smell, weather or a specific state of mind.

Abstract images allow for these types of variables to be expressed without being bogged down by representation. These paintings are interpretations of points in time that are important to me personally, however when they are finished they are no longer mine. A painting takes on a life of its own when put on display. The ghost of an image can live in the mind much longer than the image itself.

Laramie's Gallery 211: Reception Friday for "Western Sets and Settings"

Gallery 211 in downtown Laramie presents "Western Sets and Settings," featuring work by Shawn Reese, Sterling Smith, and Amiee Reese (sample of her work from recycled materials shown above).
