Art and Landscapes the Red Desert is is a professional-level juried art exhibition that includes photography and fine art pieces by local and national artists. The intent of Art and Landscapes of the Red Desert is to create a dialogue about public lands in the Red Desert and communicate how these lands are used and their significance to those who live, work, play in, and otherwise value this area. The BLM is currently revising its 20-year management plan for large portions of public lands in the Red Desert and it is our hope that a visual dialogue will encourage community engagement with this public land planning process.

The Corridor Gallery and Wind City Books in downtown Casper present an art show and book signing celebrating “The Art of Storytelling.”

The gallery show features original artworks used in illustrated books by artists Bruce MacPherson, Aumi K. Perry, Zachary Pullen and Kendra Spanjer. In conjunction, Wind City Books will host these illustrators and many Wyoming authors in an all-day book signing.

MacPherson, of Vienna, Va., has illustrated for magazines, newspapers, games, books and national advertising campaigns. His clients include Mattel, National Geographic Society, New York Times, Texas Roadhouse Restaurants, Radio Shack, Red Robin Restaurants and many more.

Perry, of Casper, earned her fine arts degree from the University of Wyoming in 2001. She then studied drawing and painting under Hans-Peter Szameit and Sanna Tomac for three years. She has also studied with noted painters John Michael Carter and David Leffel. Aumi’s paintings have been featured in shows, galleries and private collections across the U.S.

Pullen’s character-oriented illustrations have been seen in The New York Times Book Review, Sports Illustrated, Esquire, GolfWorld, The Wall Street Journal and many other publications. His first picture book, “The Toughest Cowboy or How the Wild West was Tamed,” garnered a starred review from the School Library Journal and was placed on the Texas Blue Bonnet Master List for 2006-2007. His second book, “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” also received a starred review from Publishers Weekly. He lives in Casper.

Spanjer divides her time between being “a writer who illustrates” and “an illustrator who writes.” She and Karla Oceanak are the co-creators of an alphabetically-inspired graphic novel for middle grade readers: the Aldo Zelnick Comic Novel Series, published by Bailiwick Press. Titles so far include “Artsy-Fartsy” (December 2009), “Bogus” (June 2010), “Cahoots” (May 2011), "Dumbstruck” (August 2011), “Egghead” (May 2012), “Finicky” (September 2012) and “Glitch” (November 2012). She lives in Fort Collins, Colo.

UW Visual Arts Gallery opens new exhibit Nov. 16

Tsehai Johnson and Melissa Haviland’s ceramic and printmaking exhibitions can be seen Nov. 16-Dec. 14 at the University of Wyoming Visual Arts Gallery, located on the corner of 22nd Street and Willett Drive. The opening reception is scheduled Friday, Nov. 16, from 6-8 p.m.The exhibitions and reception are free and open to the public.

Johnson is a Colorado-based artist who explores the boundaries between public and private life. Through porcelain objects, interactive installations and mixed-media wall pieces, she references dense ornamentation while also exploring the disorder of everyday life. An assistant professor in the Metropolitan State College of Denver Art Department, Johnson recently was awarded an Art in Architecture commission for Denver’s Rogers Federal Building.

Haviland's artwork explores lineage, ritual and practice within objects that are gendered and classed, such as fine china, which have both feminine and upper-class connotations. An artist-printmaker living in Athens, Ohio, she received her master of fine arts degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and bachelor of fine arts from Illinois State University. She currently teaches printmaking, drawing and papermaking at Ohio University.

Reception for "Found, but not Captured" exhibit Nov. 2 at UW's Gallery 234

The exhibition “Found, but not Captured” by artist Jessica Neuwerth can be seen through Nov. 3 in the University of Wyoming Union Gallery 234 in Laramie.

A reception for the exhibition is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2.

A UW senior in biology and environment and natural resources, Neuwerth is a Wyoming native with a passion for photography. She says she uses her photography as a “semi-therapeutic form of expression.”

Neuwerth’s work is largely driven by Wyoming landscape and nature.

“Our state has gorgeous things, both large and small, and I hope to artistically express their versatility,” she says.

Potters' Depot Gallery in Buffalo features "Masks of the World"

Carlos Mellizo's "Faces from the Hispanic World" exhibit opens Oct. 5 at at UNC Michener Gallery

A selection of pencil sketches by Carlos Mellizo, University of Wyoming professor emeritus of philosophy, will be displayed this month in the University of Northern Colorado Mari Michener Gallery, at the north entrance of the James A. Michener Library.

His works, “Faces from the Hispanic World,” will be displayed as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. Photographs from the Gabe & Jody Lopez collection “Beets, Baseball and Beyond” also will be exhibited.

The opening reception for the event will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5. UNC Professor Emeritus Alfonso Rodriguez will read from his poetry collections and refreshments will be served.

Born in Madrid, Spain, Mellizo has published widely in Spain and Latin America, and has received numerous academic awards for his teaching, research and creative work. Painting and drawing are two of his favorite hobbies.

Art, Design & Dine adds CRMC exhibit by Dr. Kevin Robinett to its Sept. 13 artwalk

Art, Design & Dine Artwalk adds a new venue this month.

The Cheyenne Regional Medical Center exhibit, “Graphic Art as a Process,” features paintings by Dr. Kevin Robinett. Dr. Robinett is a psychiatrist who has practiced medicine in Cheyenne for 16 years. His paintings will be displayed in the hospital’s north hallway through December.

Cheyenne Regional began “Art is Healing” in 2011. The series highlights artwork created by members of Cheyenne’s medical community. Dr. Robinett is the third medical professional to have artwork featured.

An artist’s reception for Dr. Robinett will be held September 13, 5 to 8 p.m., in the north hallway as part of Art, Design & Dine. The reception is open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

"Esse Quam Videri: Muslim Self-Portraits" exhibit at Heart Mountain Interpretive Center through Sept. 18

The Heart Mountain Interpretive Center at the site of a World War II Japanese-American internment camp outside of Cody, Wyo. will present a new exhibit featuring self-portraits that reveal Muslim Americans in everyday life. The exhibit is intended to counteract stereotypes and preconceived notions about Muslims in America at this time in history. Esse Quam Videri: Muslim Self-Portraits will be exhibited in the Ford Foundation Special Exhibition Area through Sept. 18, 2012.

"This exhibit is the first in a series of exhibits at the Interpretive Center that will encourage visitors to think about prejudice, stereotyping and religious, racial and ethnic profiling," said Stevan Leger executive director.

"Esse Quam Videri" means "to be rather than to seem." The exhibit includes photographs, collaged images and self-drawn portraits of and by Muslim Americans are presented with short essays to add context.

Call for entries: "Embracing our Differences"

"Embracing Our Differences" invites art submissions for its 10th annual outdoor art exhibit celebrating diversity. National and international submissions are encouraged. 39 artists will be selected for the exhibit. The exhibit will be displayed April and May 2013 at Island Park along Sarasota, Florida’s beautiful bayfront. Since 2004, the exhibit has been viewed by more than 1,300,000 visitors. The exhibit will contain 38 billboard-sized (16 feet wide by 12 1/2 feet high) images of the selected artworks.

Final selections will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of the theme “embracing our differences”. Submissions will also be evaluated on how effectively it will read outdoors when enlarged to billboard size. Final selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of professional artists, curators and art professionals. A total of $3,000.00 in awards will be presented.

Submissions must be postmarked no later than January 7, 2013. There is no submission fee nor limit on the number of entries.

The mission of Embracing Our Differences is to use art as a catalyst for creating awareness and promoting the value of diversity, the benefits of inclusion and the significance of the active rejection of hatred and prejudice.

Call for entries: "Politicizing Aesthetics" at USD Galleries

The University Art Galleries (UAG) at the University of South Dakota invites all professional artists and students enrolled in graduate programs to submit entries to “Politicizing Aesthetics,” a national juried exhibition. Contemporary, original artworks in new media, installation, film, print, sculpture, ceramics, painting, handmade artist books, photography, and fiber are welcome. We are looking for works that address current political and social issues, such as debt, war, human rights, and land rights; works that explore the body politic; works that examine the relationship between politics and aesthetic form; and works that explore the relationship between political choices and aesthetic taste. REMINDER: Reception this evening for "A Horse, Of Course"

A public reception for “A Horse, Of Course,” one of the Wyoming State Museum’s newest exhibits, will be held May 24, from 5-7 p.m.

Horses have had a huge influence on the western experience and Wyoming history, a new exhibit “A Horse, Of Course,” which opened at the Wyoming State Museum May 1, explores that relationship.

Through photographs, artwork and artifacts drawn exclusively from the collections of the Wyoming State Museum and State Archives, the exhibit focues on the important role horses played in opening the American West.
