Wyoming Summer Music Festivals

Summer is the time to get out and enjoy Wyoming’s great outdoors and great musicians! Luckily there are still plenty of music festivals coming up across the state.

The Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Hole is celebrating its 51st season with concerts Tuesday through Saturday nights until August 18th. Music fans have a variety of choices, from the Festival’s renowned classical offerings to bluegrass and jazz.

This coming weekend (July 27-29) head to Kemmerer and take part in the Oyster Ridge Music Festival, Wyoming’s “largest, free music festival”! Don’t just come for the music though, Oyster Ridge has planned workshops, competitions and vendors.
Travel to Casper Mountain August 4-5 for an exciting weekend of great bluegrass music at the Beartrap Summer Festival! Beartrap promises a variety of vendors including artists, craftspeople and, of course, food!
 
Music fans have a couple of choices the weekend of August 10-12! Head to Ten Sleep for the twelfth Nowoodstock festival, only $30 for a weekend pass!
 
Or, if you find yourself in the south of the state on August 11^th, join the Sweetwater Blues and Brew Festival at Bunning Park in Rock Springs.

Wyoming Shakespeare Festival Company on tour

July is the month for Wyomingites to catch one of the Bard’s great dramas, King Lear. The Lander-based troupe begins their tour today in Torrington, giving theater fans across the state the opportunity to follow Lear’s descent into madness.

Diane Springford, founder of the company, discusses the influence of a Parisian King Lear production in a Casper Star-Tribune article, which also provides background on the troupe.

Jayme Feary leads July 14 "Writers in the Park" session

The Grand Teton Association invites you to join their Writers in the Park series every second Saturday of the summer months. Writers both serious and casual, working in all areas of interest are welcome. The workshops are free.

Saturday, July 14th, Jayme Feary will lead the workshop with discussion and writing exercises.

We will meet at 9:00am at the flagpole in front of the park Visitors Center in Moose rain or shine. From there we will go to a good place to write and talk together. Bring paper and pen, appropriate outdoor clothing for variable weather conditions and perhaps water and something to sit on. The workshop ends at noon.

Jayme Feary specializes in narrative nonfiction. He is a frequent magazine contributor. The Wyoming Arts Council awarded him a 2011 Fellowship in Creative Nonfiction. He earned an MFA from the University of Montana, where he taught composition and creative nonfiction. He lives in Jackson, Wyoming.

Jayme's workshop is titled: "Storytelling--The Secret Behind 'Show, Don't Tell'"

He says, "Have you ever wondered how to write a great scene that transports readers so deeply into the story that they forget they are reading? The key is the application of the oft-taught 'Show, Don't Tell' rule. But what is this rule really saying? How can we shift our writing from telling to showing? We'll practice writing a scene and will discuss how we can improve. Educational, practical, and fun.

Wednesday Night Live debuts July 11 at The Nic

Every Wednesday evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. (starting July 11): This year, the Nicolaysen Art Museum kicks off Wednesday Night Live – its live, 8-week summer concert series – on July 11 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday Night Live concerts are free and listeners are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets so they can relax while enjoying a variety of music. Lander RiverFest announces music line-up

Lander Art Center’s 4th Annual RiverFest: Art and Music in the Park is a celebration of regional art, music, art demonstrations and installations, dance performances and food and drinks.

This year, RiverFest is scheduled for July 21, 2012 in Lander City Park at 405 Fremont St. from 11 am to 7 pm.

Juried artists display and sell their handmade crafts and original artwork which ranges from painting to pottery to jewelry.

Dancer's Workshop of Jackson Hole and Promoting Arts in Lander Scools (PALS) partners with the Lander Art Center to arrange a dance and movement performance of the Summer Creative Arts Camp local youth at 11 am.

Lander's own Fluffy Buffalo will shake our booty at 12:30pm.

The Patti Fiasco promises more high energy sound at 2:30pm.

Head for the Hills brings modern acoustic harmonies and improvisation from Ft. Collins, Co.

Demonstrations will include screenprinting, pottery, art installations, and wood carvings. Other activities will include a family friendly scavenger hunt and hula hoops sold by local hipster Jagoe Reid.

Wyoming Wilderness Association offers a weekend of art and nature with painter Joan Hoffman

The Wyoming Wilderness Association is excited to be hosting a weekend of art and nature with Joan Hoffmann, extraordinary oil and pastel artist from Colorado and Vermont, conservationist and teacher.

Friday- Sunday June, 15-17th, Hoffmann will inspire painters of any medium or skill level, in a car campout near Honeycomb Buttes. Saturday morning artists will rendezvous to set up car camping near the Honeycombs, with short day hikes to paint, and campfire critiques and stories to follow. Sunday morning, artists will paint the gorgeous Honeycomb Buttes for a grand finale of an inspiring art-filled weekend. This opportunity is free and open to the public. Snowy Range Summer Theatre: "Santaland Diaries," "Romance, Romance" and "Always... Patsy Cline"

An irreverent, hilarious tale of a Christmas elf gone bad; a family-friendly, toe-tapping tribute to a country music legend; and a romantic musical about the roller coaster of love are all subjects of the 59th season of Snowy Range Summer Theatre.

Presented by the University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance, the summer theatre season opens June 5-8, with David Sedaris' "The Santaland Diaries," followed by the crowd-pleasing "Always ... Patsy Cline" June 26 -30. The season closes July 10-14, with the Tony-nominated Broadway musical "Romance/Romance."

All theatre performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. "The Santaland Diaries" and "Romance /Romance" will be presented in the UW Fine Arts Studio Theatre, while "Always ... "The Santaland Diaries" chronicles Sedaris' real-life experience as Crumpet the Elf in a Macy's Santaland display. Touted by critics as "... quite possibly the 31 funniest pages of text published in the past quarter century" (Seattle Weekly), "The Santaland Diaries" riffs on a few of Sedaris' truly odd encounters with his fellow man during the height of the holiday crunch.

This breakout piece for the now best-selling author of "When You Are Engulfed in Flames," "Me Talk Pretty One Day," and "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim" follows Sedaris' attempts to enter into the holiday spirit as he deals with the humiliation of elf training, abusive customers, screaming children and badly cast Santas.

A sold-out hit off Broadway, "Always ... Patsy Cline" is a family-friendly, toe-tapping tribute to the musical legend and one of the most frequently produced musicals in the United States. Based on an endearing true story, the show recounts the real-life friendship between Cline and fan Louise Seger, who befriended the country music legend in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued with a correspondence until Cline's untimely death.

Directed by Charlotte Guyette, "Always ... Patsy Cline" combines down-home country humor, true emotion and even some audience participation. It features renditions of more than two dozen of Patsy's unforgettable hits, including "Crazy," "Walkin' After Midnight," "Sweet Dreams" and "I Fall to Pieces."

"Romance/Romance" is a musical pairing of two distinctive one-act comedies that explore the roller coaster of love. Based on Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler's tale, "The Little Comedy," Act 1 is a flirtatious affair, set in turn-of-the-century Vienna, between two worldly high-society types in search of real love.

Act 2 is a modern look at affection and disaffection between two married couples sharing a summer house in the Hamptons, based on the Jules Renard play, "Pain de Menage." Directed by Lee Hodgson and featuring UW Department of Music faculty members Larry Hensel and Nicole Lamartine, "Romance/Romance" was an off-Broadway sensation that moved successfully to Broadway, and is a perfect change from the modern mega musical.

Country music legend Merle Haggard to perform at Cheyenne Frontier Days

This just in (from the Casper Star-Tribune):

Country music legend Merle Haggard plans to play Cheyenne Frontier Days this summer.

Event organizers said Haggard would play July 22 with Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers Band, of Wyoming, as the opening act.

It will be the second time Haggard has played at Frontier Days. The first was in 1979.

Tickets go on sale on Friday.

Frontier Days runs from July 20-29. Other performers who are set to appear include Hank Williams Jr., Reba McEntire and the Zac Brown Band.

On Wednesday, Haggard's publicist announced the singer is being treated for pneumonia in a Georgia hospital and has had to cancel the rest of his January concert dates.

Take part in the dancing, music, and energy of the Plains Indian Museum Powwow. Dancers, drum groups, and artists gather from across the Northern Plains to celebrate the vibrant cultural traditions and histories of the people of the Plains that are still present today. Our Powwow is not a demonstration but a competitive event that brings in talented dancers and drum groups who will show you what a Powwow is all about.

A popular educational program is the Powwow Learning Tipi. Gloria Goggles, a Lakota educator from Ethete, Wyoming, invites visitors to discover the traditions of powwow. Young visitors have the opportunity to try on different types of powwow clothing. The tipi provides a relaxed atmosphere to explore different powwow dance styles and their origins.

Over forty Native artists will have booths on the Powwow grounds, along with fry bread vendors and a grill menu and beverages in the concession stand.

Gate opens to the public at 9:30 a.m. Admission is good for one day of the event, please check the event schedule, which is a general guide and subject to change due to weather and number of participants.
