Call for entries: SculptureWalk in Sioux Falls, S.D.

SculptureWalk is an exhibit of original outdoor sculptures displayed year-round in downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a progressive community of 150,000.

SculptureWalk is a 501c3 non-profit volunteer organization and all money raised goes directly into the program.

The sculptures are owned by the artists and loaned to the exhibit. This will be our 9th year.  All sculptures are insured for liability and physical damage.

We actively promote the sale of sculptures to the public, and 63 sculptures were sold and 5 commissions occurred during the first five years. Eighteen sculptures have been leased. SculptureWalk receives 25% commission on sold and commissioned works.

Sculptors may submit up to four original sculpture entries.

All SculptureWalk artists receive travel reimbursements as explained in the Call to Artists. The formula is up to 50 cents a mile round-trip if traveling to Sioux Falls, and up to $500 for shipping expenses if the sculpture is shipped to Sioux Falls. Accommodations for two nights at the Holiday Inn City Centre in downtown Sioux Falls is also provided on delivery weekend in May.

Most of the sculptures will be displayed on 3' or 4' high quartize pedestals, 25" to 60" sculptures look fantastic on these pedestals. Larger sculptures will be placed on concrete pads. We ask sculptors to secure steel plates to the bottom of the sculptures because all sculptures will be welded down for security and safety.

Our objective is to have a well balanced exhibit with all styles, types, materials and sizes of sculptures.

All sculptures need to be made of durable material for the year-long outdoor weather and constructed with safety in mind for display in a public setting.

General Information -

• Deadline - All entries must be postmarked no later than October 15, 2012. We encourage early entry.
• Originality - All entries must be original works by the submitting sculptors.
• Acceptance - The entries are selected for entry with notification of results by November 15, 2012.
• Best of Show Awards - All entries are judged for Best of Show by 3 very well known and respected art experts.
• All sculptors will receive further program information after entry is accepted.
• Each sculpture is assigned a time for plahttps://www.facebook.com/AIR.Arts.Incubatorcement. There will be a team of 4 lifters with a welder that assist the sculptor with placement. The lifters move the sculpture to the base and it is welded down. The whole process usually takes about 5-10 minutes and then the sculptor is free to enjoy the city.
• Sculptors can make arrangements for early placement if necessary.

"Fast Food" bronzes to be dedicated Sept. 18 in downtown Cheyenne

The Cheyenne Downtown Development Foundation is pleased to be dedicating the coyote and rabbit bronzes ("Fast Food") placed on the northeast corner of 17th Street and Warren Avenue at the 17th Street Parking Lot.  A recognition plaque was added to the display thanking the many donors who made this display possible.

The ceremony will be held on Tuesday, September 18, at 10:30 a.m., at the 17th Street Parking Lot.  Following the dedication, there will be a reception at Deselms Fine Art & Custom Framing.

Stan Dolega's "Wind Code" installed at new Southeast Wyoming Welcome Center

From David Newell, Curator of Art at the Wyoming State Museum: "Wind Code" took its place Monday at the new Southeast Wyoming Welcome Center south of Cheyenne on I-25. Laramie sculptor Stan Dolega and company endured searing heat and an unrelenting sun, and then rain and wind, to wrestle the massive steel and stone structure into place. The sculpture was commissioned through the Wyoming Art in Public Buildings Program. It will be dedicated as part of the new facility later this summer.

Sculpture and portraits highlight summer line-up at UW Art Museum

Two new exhibitions opened Saturday at the UW Art Museum. Artist Linda Fleming was at the museum last week to help install her exhibition, Linda Fleming: Modeling the Universe, which include more than 60 maquettes and one large-scale sculpture on the terrace. The maquettes offer insight into her creative process, while the large work, just outside and adjacent to the gallery, provides an example of the scale and space of one of her larger, completed works.

Also opening on Saturday is an exhibition from the permanent collection of artist self-portraits and portraits of artists. Through the Looking Glass: The Portrait of the Artist is debuting at the Art Museum and is part of the museum's Touring Exhibition Service. Starting in the fall, this exhibition will be available to schools, libraries, other museums and community institutions around the state for no charge except one way shipping. "Altered Book Sculpture Workshop" with Jenny Dowd

Saturday, April 28th: 12:00 - 4:00 pm (Please pre-register by April 26th.)

$45.00 for members, $30.00 for students with valid student ID, and $55.00 for non-members.

Fee includes all materials.

Join the artist Jenny Dowd and learn how to turn an old or discarded book into a sculptural object. Take inspiration from the subject of the book and alter the book into something unexpected. You can choose to use only the book and re-construct the form, or bring in found objects and materials to fabricate your own concept. At the end of this workshop you will have a 3D book based sculpture.

Sheridan County Museum raising funds for statue of Wyoming artist E.W. Gollings

Call for proposals: Durango, Colo., public art project

The City of Durango invites interested artists or groups of artist to submit qualifications and artwork proposals for original three-dimensional artwork to be installed in the roundabout at the intersection of Florida Road and Riverview Drive (in the center of the roundabout). The purpose of this public art installation is to commemorate the legacy of cycling in Durango, including the city's recent selection as the overall start city for the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge, which will commence on August 20, 2012. Therefore, artwork of a cycling or kinetic theme is sought. The final proposal selected will become a part of the City's permanent public art collection. Open to artists in Mountain West states. "The Morning After" exhibit at WOW features student work NOT selected for annual UW juried show

From Works of Wyoming in Laramie:

It is time for the 17th Annual Salon Des Refuse hosted by Student Art League. The Salon des Refuse will consist of fabulous artwork created by University of Wyoming art students. It will be located in the Works of Wyoming art gallery in the Laramie Plains Civic Center, Suite 271. The reception will take place the morning of Saturday, January 28 from 10am – noon. 

“The Morning After” is the opening event and title for the Salon this year. The annual Salon de Refuse is an event started by the Student Art League and consists of artwork that was not selected for the Juried University of Wyoming Student Exhibition. The Salon de Refuse was one of the first alternative art exhibitions set up by famous artists such as Manet, Cezanne, and Picasso. These artists were not yet famous in the 1800s and their works were not allowed into the traditional galleries. We invite you to come look for your own Cezanne among this fabulous work.

The Salon will be open from January 28 – February 17. Student Art League will present a $100 cash award to one artist and Works of Wyoming has donated a membership for a second artist award. 

Gov. Hathaway statue to be unveiled Friday

A workman applies finishing touches to the pedestal that supports a new sculpture (covered by tarp) of former Wyoming Gov. Stan Hathaway by Wheatland artist Carl Jensen. Dedication of the statue is set for Friday, Nov. 18, 11 a.m., and will be attended by Gov. Matt Mead. The statue was a gift to the state of Wyoming accepted by the Capitol Commission and the State Building Commission. It is not part of the Wyoming Art in Public Buildings program.
