Nostalgic for your first time swinging a tool? Eager to enjoy some meditation time on your front points? Tell us about it. We challenge you to put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, and share with us why you ice climb. Call for applications: Creative Fusion residency program in Cleveland

Creative Fusion is an urban-based artist residency and Fellowship initiative of the Cleveland Foundation, the United States' oldest community foundation. It provides support for local cultural institutions to host international artists who have been awarded Fellowships though the Creative Fusion program's selection process. The award includes a four month residency in Cleveland, which provides the visiting artist-Fellow with opportunities to undertake innovative work in his/her discipline while making strong connections and exchanges with local artists, diverse young persons and with the greater Cleveland community.

Twelve artists are in residency annually each hosted by a local cultural institution during two four-month residency periods which take place in Spring (March-June) and Fall (August-November). The program is focused on artists from non-western European countries who can bring a contemporary view of their culture through their art making process to the Greater Cleveland community. Artistic excellence, the desire to be part of an engaged residency program with a focus on working with young persons and dialoging and creative exchange with local artists will be key criteria for selection.

Music & Poetry in Casper

ARTCORE’s Music & Poetry event kicks off this coming Monday, July 16th, in Casper. Over the next five weeks, Metro Coffee Company at 241 S. David St will host engaging arts pairings, including a writers’ open mic opportunity on July 23rd. All performances begin at 7:30 with beverages served from 7:00 to 7:30 and at intermission.

July 16: The Bower Family

Tom and Cindy Bower will host an evening featuring visual arts, music, poetry and other activities. The Bower family has long been active in many aspects of Casper arts.

July 23: Jack & Connie Wallace; Open mic for writers

Jack Wallace (violinist/fiddler) and Connie Wallace (harpist) have participated in the Wyoming music world through institutions like UW, Casper College and Cheyenne Public schools. Both play with the Wyoming Symphony.

July 30: Alicia Roberts and Charlotte Babcock

Alicia Roberts is a vocalist and Casper-native who holds a Master’s of Music and has performed in a variety of locations around the US and throughout Europe.

Charlotte Babcock a widely published and recognized Wyoming writer, who recently lectured for the Casper College Humanities Festival, where she also writes for the college’s alumni magazine.

August 6: Dem Bones Trombone Ensemble and Holly Wendt

Dem Bones has performed at a variety of occasions and its members are active in the Casper music scene.

Holly Wendt is primarily a fiction writer who holds a Ph.D. in English from Binghamton University. She currently teaches writing and literature at Casper College.

August 13: Larry Neeff and George Vlastos

Larry Neeff has been playing piano since age 10 and has played across the country with famed musicians. In 1980 he won the Wyoming Songwriter contest with “Out of the Frying Pan”.

George Vlastos has been writing consistently for twenty-five years and in 2010 he received his MFA in Poetry from the University of Wyoming. He cites Larry Neef as one of the biggest influences on his spoken word performances. He is also listed on the Wyoming Arts Council’s Artist Roster.

Deadline is June 8 for Wyoming Arts Council poetry fellowships

The postmark deadline is June 8 for the Wyoming Arts Council creative writing fellowships in poetry.

To apply, you must be a Wyoming resident, 18 or older, and not enrolled as a full-time student pursuing high school, college or university art-related degrees. There is no entry fee.

Up to three, $3,000 awards will be given. Winning poets also will receive a $500 stipend to attend the Equality State Book Festival in Casper Sept. 14-15 and read from their work with fellowship judge, Brian Turner.

Turner is a soldier-poet and the author of two poetry collections, Phantom Noise (2010) and Here, Bullet (2005). His work is drawn from his seven years in the U.S. Army, including one year as an infantry team leader in Iraq with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. Prior to that, he was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1999-2000 with the 10th Mountain Division. Turner was also featured in Operation Homecoming, a unique documentary that explores the firsthand accounts of American servicemen and women through their own words. He earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Oregon and has lived abroad in South Korea.

At the book festival in Casper, Turner will participate on a panel about soldier-writers with Luis Carlos Montalvan, U.S. Army Iraq War veteran and author of Until Tuesday: The Story of a Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him.

Open Window is a literary magazine that publishes three regular issues and one special topics issue each year. We publish new and established writers, and invite you to submit in one or more of the following categories:

Cheyenne Little Theatre Players is proud to announce our 3rd Annual New Play Project Competition. The New Play Project Competition is a program created by the Cheyenne Little Theatre Players (CLTP) to encourage, recognize and support new and established playwrights and encourage new works in the field of dramatic literature.

We are currently seeking submissions from experienced or first-time playwrights in the seven state region of Utah, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska and Colorado. Entries must be full-length plays that have not been performed previously; no film scripts or musicals are allowed. The winning stage play will receive a staged reading by CLTP during its 2011-2012 Season. The deadline for entries is March 31, 2011 and the winning entry will be announced by June 1, 2011.The winning playwright will receive a $250 cash award as well as a $200.00 stipend to assist with travel to Cheyenne to attend production meetings, auditions, rehearsals, and performances of the work. The competition entry fee is $20 per play submitted.

Call for entries: PEN American Center

The PEN American Center, the U.S. branch of the world’s oldest international literary and human rights organization, annually awards over $100,000 in literary awards, including the $5,000 PEN/Phyllis Naylor Working Writer Fellowship to an author working on a piece of children's or young-adult fiction. This fellowship honors a writer whose work is of high literary caliber, but who may not yet have attracted a broad readership, to pursue long-term or book-length projects that might not otherwise be possible. Contest Judge Bio: Jan Beatty

Jan Beatty's new book, Red Sugar, was published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in Spring, 2008. Other books include Boneshaker and Mad River, winner of the 1994 Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize. Beatty's poetry has appeared in Quarterly West, Gulf Coast, Indiana Review, and Court Green, and in anthologies published by Oxford University Press, University of Illinois Press, and University of Iowa Press. Awards include the $15,000 Creative Achievement Award in Literature from the Heinz Foundation, the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry, and two fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. For the past thirteen years, she has hosted and produced "Prosody," a public radio show on NPR-affiliate WYEP-FM featuring the work of national writers. Beatty directs the creative writing program at Carlow University, where she runs the Madwomen in the Attic writing workshops and teaches in the MFA program.

Deadline draws nigh for WAC Blanchan & Doubleday writing awards

The postmark deadline for the 2011 Blanchan & Doubleday writing awards is Oct. 29, 2010.

The competition is open to Wyoming residents only, 18 or older.

The Neltje Blanchan Award, $1,000, is given for the best poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or script which is informed by a relationship with the natural world.

The Frank Nelson Doubleday Award, $1,000, is given for the best poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or script written by a woman author.

Ohio fiction writer and poet Jeanne Bryner has agreed to serve as the juror for this year’s competition.

Deadline Oct. 15 for publishing seminar in NYC

The Center for Book Arts in New York City is now inviting applications for its upcoming Letterpress Printing & Fine Press Publishing Seminar for Emerging Writers (November 10-14). Deadline is Oct. 15.

Participants will attend lectures from printers, fine press publishers, book artists, and dealers to get a practical overview of letterpress printing and fine press publishing. They will learn the basics of letterpress printing, both traditional typesetting and options with new technology, by collaboratively printing a small edition of broadsides or other projects. This free workshop is most suitable for those with little or no previous letterpress experience.

Deadline for the 2010 Del Sol Press Poetry Prize contest is March 15, 2010.

We invite contest submissions from both emerging and established poets, published or unpublished. In keeping with the philosophy of Web del Sol, we are only interested in the very best poetry, regardless of source or type.

Finalist manuscripts will also be considered for publication.

Winner receives a $1,200 Honorarium, paid in Summer 2010; book publication by Del Sol Press in fall 2010, in The Annual Del Sol Press Poetry Series; and 20 copies of the winning book.

Eligibility: Poets who are at least 18 years of age and who live inside or outside the United States.

Call for entries: Owen Wister Review

Submissions from writers and artists are being accepted for the University of Wyoming's nationally acclaimed literary and arts journal, the Owen Wister Review.

Journal editors will select original works of fiction, poetry, photography and art for inclusion in the 2010 edition. Submission deadline is Friday, Jan. 29, 2010.

"We are expecting another great year and can't wait to start looking through this year's submissions," says Joshua Watanabe, OWR editor.
In October, OWR won its second Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Award.

The 2010 Green Book Festival will consider published, self-published and independent publisher works in the following categories: non-fiction, fiction, children's books, teenage, how-to, audio/spoken word, comics/graphic novels, poetry, science fiction/horror, biography/autobiography, gardening, cookbooks, animals, photography/art, e-books, wild card (anything goes!), scientific, white paper, legal, business, mystery and spiritual.
