Made in Wyoming Chamber Music announces composition contest

Made in Wyoming Chamber Music is pleased to announce a composition contest for residents of Cheyenne and Laramie County. The contest has two divisions: student and adult. The student category includes junior and senior high students. The adult division includes college students and other adults.

There will be two winners in each division, and a fifty dollar prize will be awarded to each of the four winning composers. The winning compositions will be performed at the open rehearsal for the Made in Wyoming concert, Saturday, May 11, 2013 as well as the concert on Sunday, May 12, 2013.

Compositions submitted are to be between four and six minutes in length, and are to be for woodwind quintet (flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, French horn). Compositions must have been never performed, recorded, or distributed in public. Made in Wyoming reserves the right for first public performance, but copyright remains with the composers. Decisions of the judges will be final.

Compositions must be typeset with a program such as Finale or Sibelius. Submissions include a copy of the score and parts identified by title only, and without the name of the composer appearing on any of the music, as well as an mp3 digital recording of the composition identified only by the title of the composition.

Composers should include the following information on a separate piece of paper: their name, the title of their composition and its length, which division they are entering (and where they attend school, with their music teacher’s name if they are entering the student division), and contact information (address, contact telephone, email address).

Drama students from throughout Wyoming compete in Riverton Nov. 29-Dec. 1

Our Wyoming Arts Council colleague Camellia El-Antably is heading off to Riverton tomorrow for the Wyoming State Drama Competition. Here's her description of the event:

The Wyoming State Drama Competition is put on by the Wyoming Educators of Secondary Theatre (WEST) each year. It rotates between college campuses across the state. This year it is at Central Wyoming College in Riverton Nov. 29-Dec. 1.

It is one of the most complex theatre competitions nationally, because schools/students may compete in all areas of performance and tech, including:

Proscenium, Arena, Reader's Theatre, Original Scripts (3 kinds), Duets & Monologues (humorous or dramatic), Makeup, Scenic Design, Lighting Design, Publicity, Costume. The tech areas (makeup, scene, lights, publicity, costume) offer four levels with stronger criteria as the student gains experience.

 

All high schools are eligible to participate, another departure from competitions in other states, as there are no district-level competitions.

Approximately 35 high schools participate. CWC's Fine Arts Building will be overrun with students putting on makeup, rehearsing, watching performances or viewing technical entries. Students participate in critiques with professional judges. Judges are drawn from colleges and professional theatre groups in Wyoming and neighboring states.

WEST is a membership group of teachers and coaches and other interested parties from across the state. The competition is run entirely by them, with no paid staff. Anyone supportive of theatre in the schools can be a member of WEST. Find out more about WEST at: http://www.wyoest.net/

Call for entries to writers in Wyoming!

The postmark deadline for applications for the Blanchan and Doubleday writing competitions is Nov. 2 -- a week from this Friday. Here is some info about the contests and this year's judge.

These awards are designed to bring attention to writers who have not yet received wide recognition for their work, and to support emerging writers at crucial times in their careers. Poets, fiction writers, essayists, and script writers who have published no more than one book in each genre and who are not students or faculty members are invited to apply by submitting manuscripts and an entry form by the deadline.

The Neltje Blanchan Award, $1,000, is given for the best poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or script which is informed by a relationship with the natural world.

The Frank Nelson Doubleday Award, $1,000, is given for the best poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or script written by a woman author.

Katharine Coles will serve as the judge for the 2013 Neltje Blanchan and Frank Nelson Doubleday writing awards.

Coles will travel to Wyoming next spring for a reading with the Blanchan and Doubleday awardees. Details will be available in February 2013. 

Katharine Coles’ fifth and sixth collections of poems, The Earth Is Not Flat and Flight, are forthcoming in 2013 and 2015 from Red Hen Press.  Her poems, essays, and stories have appeared in such journals as The Paris Review, The Gettysburg Review, Poetry, Image, Seneca Review, North American Review, Southwest Review, DIAGRAM, and Ascent.  In 2009-10, she served as the inaugural director of the Harriet Monroe Poetry Institute for the Poetry Foundation. She is a professor at the University of Utah, where she founded and co-directs the Utah Symposium in Science and Literature. She is a 2012 Guggenheim Foundation Fellow.

In 2010, she traveled to Antarctica to write poems under the auspices of the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artists and Writers Program

Guidelines
Composers of all ages and nationalities may apply.
Required instrumentation:
· Flute (may double on piccolo)
· Saxophone: either soprano, alto , or tenor (soprano or alto preferred) or multiples in any combination
· Piano Length: 10-15 minutes
Score: Each composer must submit a legible score of professional quality with individual parts for flute and saxophone. No marks identifying the composer should appear anywhere on the score. A supporting recording (CD only) is helpful but not required. MIDI realizations are acceptable.
Number of entries: Composers may submit as many entries as they like following these guidelines for each composition.
Returning materials: If you would like your score and recording returned, please enclose a self-addressed envelope with correct US postage.

Judging
All compositions will be judged by a committee comprised of Verismo Trio, the president of Wyoming Music Teacher’s Association, and one outside musician in a reading session with Verismo Trio.

Registration fee
Thanks to this generous donation from Wyoming Music Teacher’s Association, there is no registration fee.

You may not submit a work that has already been professionally recorded for commercial release.

Postmark deadline for Wyoming Arts Council poetry fellowships is June 8

Friday, June 8, is the postmark deadline or the Wyoming Arts Council creative writing fellowships in poetry.

To apply, you must be a Wyoming resident, 18 or older, and not enrolled as a full-time student pursuing high school, college or university art-related degrees. There is no entry fee.

Up to three, $3,000 awards will be given. Winning poets also will receive a $500 stipend to attend the Equality State Book Festival in Casper Sept. 14-15 and read from their work with fellowship judge Brian Turner.

Turner is a soldier-poet and the author of two poetry collections, Phantom Noise (2010) and Here, Bullet (2005). His work is drawn from his seven years in the U.S. Army, including one year as an infantry team leader in Iraq with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. Prior to that, he was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1999-2000 with the 10th Mountain Division. Turner was also featured in Operation Homecoming, a unique documentary that explores the firsthand accounts of American servicemen and women through their own words. He earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Oregon and has lived abroad in South Korea.

At the book festival in Casper, Turner will participate on a panel about soldier-writers with Luis Carlos Montalvan, U.S. Army Iraq War veteran and author of Until Tuesday: The Story of a Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him.

Preston Randolph's "The Summer of '81" named winner of Wyoming Short Film Contest

From the Wyoming Film Office:

“The Summer of ‘81,” a short film produced by Preston Randolph and filmed near Meeteetse, Wyoming is the winner of this year’s Wyoming Short Film Contest. The short tells the unique story of Wyoming man, Bob Taylor and the spirit and struggles of his life's journey. From teaching in the city, to being a Cowboy in Wyoming, to raising his family without electricity in the cabin he built by hand, and of course baseball. Now in its fifth year, the Wyoming Short Film Contest awarded $25,000 to Randolph who will now have the opportunity to produce another film in Wyoming with the proceeds.

Randolph began his film making career at Cody High School, where he remains the only student to have won the statewide Wyoming High School Short Film Festival three years running. Alongside his filmmaking career, Randolph dedicates the remainder of his time in being a political activist for social justice. He has organized an annual charity drive for the people of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and is currently working on a feature-length documentary, “Wind Chases the Sun.” The film exposes the case of Native American activist Leonard Peltier, and his ongoing 36 years of imprisonment.

According to film contest administrator, Colin Stricklin, "The point of this contest is not just to award one filmmaker $25,000. Rather, it's our goal to provide exposure to the talented filmmakers, to support independent film projects and to encourage filmmakers to consider shooting their projects in Wyoming. There is an exceptional amount of talent on display in this contest, both from in-state and out-of-state filmmakers."

For 2012, the Film Office also offered a Filmmaker’s Choice Award giving contest entrants the opportunity to recognize a fellow filmmaker. The winner of the award, and the associated $5,000, was filmmaker Mark Pedri. His film, “Western Wandering,” follows the filmmaker on a 700-mile mountain bike ride around Wyoming to discover what truly defines the state he was born and raised in.

Judging & reception for Wyoming Conservation Stamp Art Competition will be held April 13 in Cheyenne

Judging and a reception for the 29th annual Wyoming State Conservation Stamp Art Competition will be held Friday, April 13, at Wyoming Game and Fish Headquarters, 5400 Bishop Blvd. in Cheyenne. The wildlife species for this year's competition is the greater short horned lizard or horned toad.

The Game and Fish has received 59 paintings this year from artists in 18 states competing for the $3,500 first place prize money and the right to have their work reproduced on the 2013 conservation stamp. All paintings will be on display at the reception. A conservation stamp is required for most licensed hunters and anglers. Approximately 100,000 conservation stamps are printed each year.

Judging will take place on the afternoon of April 13. Following the judging, Wyoming Wildlife- The Foundation and the department will host a reception open to the public beginning at 5 p.m. with winners announced at 6 p.m. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

Call for entries: Wyoming Short Film Contest

For the fifth year running, the Wyoming Film Office is seeking submissions for the Wyoming Short Film Contest. Film makers can submit their videos online at www.wyomingshortfilmcontest.com by April 4, 2012.  A $25,000 first prize will be awarded to the winning entry with a storyline that takes place in Wyoming, features Wyoming, or presents the state as a major character.

Colin Stricklin, Film Office Specialist explains the process, “There are three stages to the contest that allows for more public involvement and engagement. The submission round, the public voting round, and the judges' panel round. After the submission round ends, all entries will go on to public voting. The ten short films with the most votes become finalists. Our judges' panel will review these finalists and select the ultimate winner.”  

The judging panel is made up of film production, visual arts and industry representatives and they will judge the entries based on certain criteria including cinematography, screenplay, acting, sound design, editing and overall production value.

Governor's Capitol Art Exhibition call for entries will be in the mail this week

The Wyoming State Museum's Curator of Art, David L. Newell, reports that the Call for Entries for the 2012 Governor's Capitol Art Exhibition and Sale are mailing this week.

"The show is slightly later this year and we are also experimenting the a new venue and format. The exhibition will be held at the Hynds Building in downtown Cheyenne rather than at the State Museum. It will also be a two-day installation -- although I can't call it a pop-up show because people know about it. The new space allows us to grow the show and accept larger pieces."

The show will be June 30 and July 1. The postmark deadline for entries is March 30. Artists must be registered with the Wyoming Arts Council's Artist Image Registry (AIR) to participate in the show. There are no entry fees.
