Wyoming Arts Council artist roster application is now available online

The Wyoming Arts Council accepts applications annually for its artist roster. Artists and arts groups in the literary, performing and visual arts can now apply online via the CaFÉ (Call for Entry) program of the Western States Arts Federation. Folk artists may apply in any of these categories.

The WAC has extended the application deadline to Jan. 7, 2013.

Wyoming residents can register for CaFÉ for free at http://www.callforentry.org. Once registered, look up the call name of “Wyoming Arts Council Artist Roster” to begin the process.

The WAC roster seeks to value artistic excellence through the selected artists, and to engage the public as patrons and advocates for the arts. Roster artists not only represent artistic excellence, but also become ambassadors for the WAC, and are a form of dynamic public art. Organizations, schools and festival presenters can write Artists Across Wyoming grants to bring these artists to their communities.

Deadline is Jan. 15 for Historic Architecture Assistance Fund

The Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund is pleased to help the Historic Architecture Assistance Fund (HAAF). HAAF will provide the services of architects and engineers to the owners of historic buildings to address issues involved with the rehabilitation and use of such properties. The next deadline for applications is January 15, 2013.

The fund cannot support the entire architectural or engineering services needed for a complete rehabilitation project. Typical projects that can be funded include a building assessment, structural analysis, analysis of building code and ADA requirements, and façade and signage schematic design.

The HAAF is available to a variety of property owners. The fund is meant to support private and not-for-profit property owners, who are not eligible for many grant programs. Government entities can also apply for the funds. The HAAF was established to provide assistance to properties that are historic, which is generally understood to be over 50 years of age. Any proposed work that the HAAF would contribute to with assessment and design work must maintain or restore the historic integrity of the property. The fund is not intended to provide assistance with remodeling projects that would change the character of the historic building or address common utility system questions. The HAAF is best used to address conditions and materials that provide challenges for rehabilitation projects, such as potentially compromised structural systems, exterior wall materials, windows, ADA and code compliance, and the loss of historic components.

It should be understood that all properties will be treated as historic; that is, eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and proposed work will meet the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. Applications may be submitted to either the Wyoming Main Street Program, the Alliance for Historic Wyoming, or the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).

Call for artists: ArtSpot in Jackson

From Jackson Hole Public Art:

Located on Hwy 89 in Jackson, the ArtSpot is seen by an average of 30,000 people per day. The ArtSpot is a kinetic sign structure that was designed and built by the Center of Wonder's Public Art Ambassador Bland Hoke. It was created from a repurposed chairlift tower donated by the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Artists are supported with a $2000 stipend, huge exposure and an introduction to creating work for a public setting. Selected works inspire a sense of community by depicting shared themes, values and experiences. Artwork that is cynical, political or negative will not be considered. Installations change on the solstices and/or the equinoxes.

Friday, June 8, is the postmark deadline or the Wyoming Arts Council creative writing fellowships in poetry.

To apply, you must be a Wyoming resident, 18 or older, and not enrolled as a full-time student pursuing high school, college or university art-related degrees. There is no entry fee.

Up to three, $3,000 awards will be given. Winning poets also will receive a $500 stipend to attend the Equality State Book Festival in Casper Sept. 14-15 and read from their work with fellowship judge Brian Turner.

Turner is a soldier-poet and the author of two poetry collections, Phantom Noise (2010) and Here, Bullet (2005). His work is drawn from his seven years in the U.S. Army, including one year as an infantry team leader in Iraq with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. Prior to that, he was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1999-2000 with the 10th Mountain Division. Turner was also featured in Operation Homecoming, a unique documentary that explores the firsthand accounts of American servicemen and women through their own words. He earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Oregon and has lived abroad in South Korea.

At the book festival in Casper, Turner will participate on a panel about soldier-writers with Luis Carlos Montalvan, U.S. Army Iraq War veteran and author of Until Tuesday: The Story of a Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him.

Must be typed on standard 8 ½ x 11 inch white paper, in standard font, 12-point.

Use standard manuscript format, one-inch margins all around.

Only the title and page number must appear on each page in header/footer; author’s name must not appear anywhere on the manuscript.

Do not staple pages together or use a cover or binder; paper clip only.

Submit two copies of each entry.

No previously published work.  All work must be original to the author.

Apply now for WESTAF TourWest grants

TourWest is a competitive grant program that provides subsidies to arts and community organizations for the presentation of out-of-state touring performers and literary artists. Funds are available to organizations that sponsor performances within the 13-state WESTAF region.  Projects must take place between September 01, 2012 and August 31, 2013. All projects must have one public performance and one outreach activity. TourWest standard performance grants are available in an amount of up to $2,500 or 50% of the artistic fees, whichever is less. Applicants may apply for up to two standard performance grants. This year, they will not be accepting work samples by mail. All work samples must be uploaded as a digital file on the TourWest application site. Deadline April 20 for USArtists International grants

USArtists International provides support for American dance, music, and theater ensembles and solo artists invited to perform at significant international festivals or engagements that represent extraordinary career opportunities anywhere in the world outside the United States and its territories. The application deadline for the final grant round of the 2012 program is Friday, April 20, 2012 for projects taking place between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013. This is a receipt deadline. Call for applications: Penland School of Crafts

October 28 deadline: Penland School of Crafts, founded in 1929 in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, offers a Resident Artist Program which invites artists working in traditional and nontraditional studio crafts to live and work at the school for three years. There are three openings in the program for 2012, to be filled by artists working in books/paper, clay, glass, metals, photography, printmaking, iron, textiles, wood, sculpture, or mixed-media. Studios are available beginning February 2012. Eligible applicants must have a clear objective for their residency and be willing to live and work as part of a close-knit community. Penland Resident Artists pay $187.50 per month for unfurnished housing and studio space, plus $150 to $200 per month for utilities, depending on the season. Apply with a portfolio of 15-20 images, the primary basis for selection, as well as a personal statement, résumé, and two letters of recommendation. A $25 processing fee is required to apply. Call for applications: Denali National Park and Preserve artists' residency program

Denali National Park and Preserve offers residencies to artists through their Artist-in-Residence program. Each residency is ten days long and takes place between June and September. Residents stay at the East Fork Cabin located inside Denali National Park in Denali Park, AK. Residents do not receive a stipend and are responsible for their own food and transportation. In exchange for the use of the cabin, each resident is expected to donate one piece of art and offer at least one public presentation. The work will be displayed in various sites throughout the park. All artists and writers are eligible to apply. Along with their application, artists must submit six images with an image list, and all writers must submit a one-page writing sample. Application deadline extended: Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts

Shared facilities include kitchen, library, family room, and laundry facility. Meals include continental breakfast in the dining room, boxed lunch delivered to studios and dinner prepared by the Ranch’s chef communally shared in dining room.

The eight studio spaces are located in restored ranch buildings that combine comfort and refinement. Of the eight spaces, four are visual art studios that are equipped with large transom windows for abundant natural light and full spectrum daylight track lighting for late work. Two of the spaces are quiet studios reserved for writers and the remaining two studios are for composers, one of which was converted from an historic schoolhouse and contains a beautiful Steinway piano.

The Foundation will be lead by director, Kate Christensen. Christensen holds a Masters of Fine Arts, 2D studies with an emphasis in printmaking from Bowling Green State University. She has participated in over 30 exhibitions and exchanges over the last ten years, the most recent of which was in Wyoming.

“I am thrilled to be a part of this unique program and have no doubt that Brush Creek Ranch will provide an unmatched location for creative motivation,” said Christensen. “Wyoming is my home and I find endless inspiration here – I know that other artists will fall in love with the incomparable beauty of Wyoming and Brush Creek Ranch as well.”

The Foundation offers two- to four-week residencies, based on the season. No stipends or fellowships/awards are available at this time. Artists are responsible for their own supplies. Call for entries: Women's Film Institute Shorts Tour

The Women's Film Institute is hitting the road again, and we are inviting you and your peers to submit your film to the the 3rd Annual Women's Film Institute Shorts Tour!

Over the last two years since its launch, the Women's Film Institute Shorts Tour has screened at various galleries, arthouse theaters, universities, and media arts centers all across the country and throughout the world. The diverse selection of shorts at the tour celebrates the exceptional contributions of women in the world of cinema from around the globe. The tour includes a cross-section of socially-conscious films that are a catalyst for connecting communities and fostering discussion through the power of independent filmmaking. The films serve as a quilt of stories meant to invoke and inspire audience-goers long after they leave the screening.

This is a call for entries for this year's tour. The 3rd Annual Women's Film Institute Shorts Tour accepts short films/videos 20 minutes or under in length, and of all genres: narrative, documentary, music video, animation, and experimental works. Films/videos must be directed or co-directed by women.

Call for applications: Vermont Studio Center

This announcement comes from the Vermont Studio Center in John son, Vermont:

The Vermont Studio Center is an international residency program open to all artists and writers.

Year-round, VSC hosts 50 artists and writers per month, each of whom receives an individual studio, private room, and all meals. Residencies last from 2-12 weeks and provide uninterrupted time to work, a community of creative peers, and a beautiful village setting in northern Vermont.

In addition, VSC's program includes a roster of Visiting Artists and Writers (2 painters, 2 sculptors and 2 writers per month) who offer slide talks/readings and individual studio visits/conferences.

Vermont Studio Center Fellowships
Sixteen fellowships for a 4-week residency are open to all artists and writers based on merit, as represented in the portfolio or manuscript.

Anderson/Frankel Fellowship for Chicago area/SAIC alumni
One fellowship sponsored by the Marshall Frankel Foundation and Davis Anderson, this award is open to all Chicago-area artists, including faculty and alumni of the Art Institute of Chicago, for one 4-week VSC residency.

Civil Society Institute Fellowship
One award for a 4-week residency open to an east coast minority artist with demonstrable financial need; preference will be given to artists from New Haven, Jersey City, and Baltimore. The $25 application fee is waived for eligible CSI applicants. Award includes a $500 travel stipend.

Cave Canem Fellowship
This annual fellowship provides one 4-week residency to a poet who is a Cave Canem fellow.  Home for the many voices of African American poetry, Cave Canem is committed to cultivating the artistic and professional growth of African American poets. The $25 application fee is waived for applicants.

Pollock Krasner
The Pollock-Krasner Foundation/VSC Fellowship Program for visual artists of outstanding talent will support two 4-week residencies for domestic artists.

Henry David Thoreau Fellowship
This fellowship supports a poet whose work is a living extension of the literary tradition embodied in the work of Henry David Thoreau, for a 4-week residency.

Zoland Translation Fellowship
Offered in conjunction with Zoland Poetry, this 4-week residency fellowship is open to translators. Applicants should submit 3 copies of the original poems/translations, along with a description of English-language rights, author bio, and translator CV.
