Trail End Historic Site Holiday Open House Dec. 7-9 in Sheridan

Our State Parks and Cultural Resources colleagues at Trail End Historic Site in Sheridan sent us this announcement:

 

Kick off the holiday season right this year and make plans to attend the Trail End Holiday Open House in Sheridan. This three-day event celebrates the season with live music and tasty treats served up in a historically elegant atmosphere complete with all the traditional trappings of the holidays.

An annual tradition for over twenty-five years, the Open House is scheduled for December 7-9, at the Trail End State Historic Site. Sponsored by the Trail End Guilds, Inc., the event features live entertainment and holiday decorations throughout the spectacular 1913 mansion. Open House hours are 4-7 p.m. each day. Admission is $2 for adults. Children are admitted at no charge, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Trail End – a 14,000 square foot brick mansion overlooking Sheridan’s Kendrick Park – is decorated from Thanksgiving through mid-December (open daily from 1-4 p.m. for self-guided tours). Seven ornately decorated trees stand throughout the house, from the Drawing Room to the Ballroom. Windows and staircases are draped with garlands and ribbons, while potted poinsettias enhance nearly every horizontal surface.

 

One major attraction of the Open House is the live music, with a different act featured each hour. This year’s schedule is as follows (subject to last-minute changes):

Guided tours of the mansion, home of former Wyoming Governor and United States Senator John B. Kendrick, are also offered during the Open House. Conducted by Trail End staff and volunteers, the tours feature the history of the house and grounds, plus a look at what the holidays were like earlier in the Twentieth Century.

In the mansion’s historic kitchen, Trail End staff and volunteers will serve up tasty seasonal treats. This year, hot, spiced cider is paired with delicious homemade Figgy Pudding – a holiday tradition at Trail End.

In addition to Trail End’s regularly displayed furnishings – nearly all original to the house – many additional Kendrick family items are included in the annual holiday exhibit. Visitors have an opportunity to see toys, sleds, skates, dishes, and Christmas cards from the 1910s, 20s and 30s, as well as a nativity scene made in Germany prior to World War Two, and an old-fashioned “feather” tree.

This year’s focus exhibit is “The Ad Made Me Buy It: The Power of Advertising in the Early Twentieth Century.” The whole-house panel exhibit explores the art and science of advertising, and how potential consumers were influenced by the ads placed in their reading material.

The Holiday Open House is nearly the last opportunity for visitors to enjoy the historic site this year. Trail End is closed during the winter months, from December 15, through March 31.

Over the winter, staff will be busy updating the site’s interpretive panels. The current exhibit will be replaced by a special exhibit celebrating the hundredth anniversary of Trail End’s occupation by the Kendrick family (John, Eula, Manville and Rosa-Maye Kendrick moved into the house on July 27, 1913). Keep an eye open for more information on upcoming centennial activities.

The Trail End State Historic Site is located at 400 Clarendon Avenue in Sheridan (exit 23 off Interstate 90; turn onto Fifth Street; then left onto Clarendon). Parking for the Open House is available on Delphi, Clarendon and Victoria Streets. Limited handicapped parking is available in the circular drive between the Kendrick Mansion and the Carriage House Theater. An elevator provides access to the upper and lower floors for the mobility challenged.

UW Visual Arts Gallery opens new exhibit Nov. 16

Tsehai Johnson and Melissa Haviland’s ceramic and printmaking exhibitions can be seen Nov. 16-Dec. 14 at the University of Wyoming Visual Arts Gallery, located on the corner of 22nd Street and Willett Drive. The opening reception is scheduled Friday, Nov. 16, from 6-8 p.m.The exhibitions and reception are free and open to the public.

Johnson is a Colorado-based artist who explores the boundaries between public and private life. Through porcelain objects, interactive installations and mixed-media wall pieces, she references dense ornamentation while also exploring the disorder of everyday life. An assistant professor in the Metropolitan State College of Denver Art Department, Johnson recently was awarded an Art in Architecture commission for Denver’s Rogers Federal Building.

Haviland's artwork explores lineage, ritual and practice within objects that are gendered and classed, such as fine china, which have both feminine and upper-class connotations. An artist-printmaker living in Athens, Ohio, she received her master of fine arts degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and bachelor of fine arts from Illinois State University. She currently teaches printmaking, drawing and papermaking at Ohio University.

Save the Date for Purely Pastel on Sept. 12, at 7 p.m., at the Easter and John Clay Fine Arts Gallery at Laramie County Community College. Cheyenne artist Vanda Edington will show her pastel work through Oct. 16. You won't want to miss Terrie Lombardi, a Denver artist who will do a pastel demo and show several of her pieces. There will be a display of pastel, papers, books and a slide show showing the production of pastel sticks at the Terry Ludwig Pastels factory during the reception.

Corridor Gallery in downtown Casper debuts "Member Smalls" on June 22

The Corridor management recently asked their member artists to prepare a “small work” of original art to debut exclusively at the Corridor Gallery. The Member Smalls concept came to fruition based upon the concept of providing interesting, unique, affordable and easy to hang fine artwork. “We understand that it’s often more of a challenge to integrate large artwork into a space based upon available room and cost. We wanted to offer a more intimate, personalized show with the theme based upon size versus subject matter.” - Zak Pullen, co-owner of the Corridor Gallery.

Corridor member artists Holly Bryson, Mike Flicek, Rod Knowlton, Suzette McIntyre, Aumi Perry, Fred Taraba, Leighton White and Zak Pullen will all have small works debuting at the opening reception on Friday, June 22nd at 7pm. The show will be open to the public 3 days only - showing through 4pm on Sunday, June 24th. With mediums ranging from woodcut printmaking, photography, traditional oil painting, vintage american illustration, watercolor and character illustration this show will be extremely diverse offering a range of style and discipline wide enough to interest most. Adhering to the concept of small works, attendants of the show will find the sizes of artwork ranging from 4 inches square to just around 1 foot square.

Admirers of fine art and supporters of local Casper culture are invited to attend “Member Smalls”, an exhibit of small works. If you’re looking to soak in what new material the Corridor artists have created or acquire a unique small work for a gift or a special place, you will find the show enjoyable. Most of the artists will be present and happy to answer any questions.

Lotsa people viewing "Lotsa Locks" and other paintings in the Cheyenne Depot Museum's RailART Show & Sale

Lotsa people turned out yesterday evening at the Cheyenne Depot Museum for a preview of the RailART Show and Sale which includes "Lotsa Locks" (shown above), an acryclic painting, 36x48 inches, by Wyoming artist Jeanie Schlump. The art show and sale kicks into high gear this weekend and will be on display through July 29. Sales will go toward establishing a permanent railroad art collection at the museum. After viewing the art, you can marvel at the huge model train set. UW Art Museum holds May 18 reception for summer exhibits

The University of Wyoming Art Museum will open its new summer exhibitions during a free public reception Friday, May 18, from 6-8 p.m.

New exhibitions are "Francisco Goya: Los Caprichos"; "Drawn from Life: Northern Plains Indian Portraits by David Humphreys Miller"; "Linda Fleming: Modeling the Universe"; "Journeys along the Sepik River: Tribal Art from Papua New Guinea"; and "Through the Looking Glass: The Portrait of the Artist."

Francisco Goya (Spanish, 1746-1828) is recognized as one of Spain's most important and influential artists. His "Los Caprichos" suite, which he began in 1799, established him as the father of the Modern movement in Europe. In the 80 allegorical etchings of the series, Goya explores creative freedoms that were not acceptable to the conventions of art in his time. The exhibition closes Aug. 4.

In 1935, at the age of 16, David Humphreys Miller (American, 1918-1992) arrived in South Dakota and began interviewing and drawing the Northern Plains Indians who were at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. "Drawn from Life: Northern Plains Indian Portraits by David Humphreys Miller" presents portraits of Native American men and women whose interviews contributed to his research and eventual publications as well as those who had connections to the early Hollywood film industry. The exhibition closes Aug. 11.

"Linda Fleming: Modeling the Universe" presents more than 60 maquettes that provide insight into Fleming's (American, born 1945) creative process and inspiration. The small-scale models are in a variety of mediums including cut paper, laser-cut plywood, cast bronze, and felt and combine architectural structures with patterns found in nature. This exhibition closes on Aug. 4.

"Through the Looking Glass: The Portrait of the Artist" explores the tradition of self-portraits and portraits of artists in a variety of mediums, including drawings, prints and photography. Curated from the Art Museum's permanent collection, the exhibition is available for statewide tour through the Touring Exhibition Service following its Aug. 4 closing.

"Journeys along the Sepik River: Tribal Art from Papua New Guinea" tells a story about three travelers who ventured to Papua New Guinea and the objects they acquired. Objects include skull racks, canoe prows and items of adornment. The exhibition closes Aug. 18.

"Imagine learning from the masters" is a guiding principle of the UW Art Museum's programs. The museum is located in the Centennial Complex at 2111 Willett Drive in Laramie. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free.

WY Game and Fish names winners in 29th annual Conservation Stamp competition

A reception, awards ceremony, sales and art show was held at the Cheyenne Wyoming Game and Fish headquarters on April 13, 2012 to name the winners in the 2013 Wyoming Conservation Stamp Art Compeition, featuring the Greater Short-Horned Lizard.

Linda Johnson of Riverton, a Wyoming Arts Council roster artist, received 3rd place for her water color entry. She quotes, "I felt very honored, as there were a lot of really great entries."

Greater short horned lizard or horned toad

Judging and a reception for the 29th annual Wyoming State Conservation Stamp Art Competition will be held Friday, April 13, at Wyoming Game and Fish Headquarters, 5400 Bishop Blvd. in Cheyenne. The wildlife species for this year's competition is the greater short horned lizard or horned toad.

The Game and Fish has received 59 paintings this year from artists in 18 states competing for the $3,500 first place prize money and the right to have their work reproduced on the 2013 conservation stamp. All paintings will be on display at the reception. A conservation stamp is required for most licensed hunters and anglers. Approximately 100,000 conservation stamps are printed each year.

Judging will take place on the afternoon of April 13. Following the judging, Wyoming Wildlife- The Foundation and the department will host a reception open to the public beginning at 5 p.m. with winners announced at 6 p.m. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

UW Art Museum holds reception this evening for spring exhibitions

The University of Wyoming Art Museum in Laramie will present its spring exhibitions during a free public reception from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27.

"The 37th Annual Juried UW Student Exhibition" presents the creative work of UW students from all disciplines. This year's juror is Sharon Kennedy, curator of cultural and civic engagement at the University of Nebraska's Sheldon Museum of Art. An awards ceremony for standout work from the Juried UW Student Exhibition will take place at 6:30 p.m.

Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky's "The Industrial Sublime" presents masterful large-scale color images from around the world that explore the landscape of industry, consumerism and culture. 

Brian Dickerson explores the idea of "remembered landscapes" through minimal, three-dimensional paintings on wood through his exhibition, "Constructed Paintings and Drawings." The heavily layered and reworked surfaces contain hidden forms, suggesting deep emotional meaning and a sense of mystery.

"Photography from the Twentieth Century," from the Art Museum Collection, examines the creative vision of early photographers and their place in developing of an American genre. The first show is a two-part exhibition that focuses on pictorial and portrait traditions -- the basis of early photography.

Also from the Art Museum's collection, "Woven Traditions, Native American Basketry of the Southwest," shows baskets that feature traditional and contemporary designs, including turtles, spiders, butterflies and kachinas.

State museum sponsors reception Jan. 19 for "Coffee: The World in Your Cup"

A public reception for the Wyoming State Museum’s temporary exhibit, “Coffee: The World in Your Cup,” will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, January 19.

Coffee from City News and Pipe Shop, and the treats, will be served in the Multi-Purpose Room of the museum in Cheyenne.

“Coffee: The World in Your Cup” is a nationally touring exhibit currently on display at the Wyoming State Museum. The exhibit provides a broad overview of the powerful influence of coffee on environments, human cultures, and economies worldwide.

The exhibit features color photographs of farms from South America to Africa to the Pacific Islands that tell the global story of coffee cultivation and trade, four short videos featuring different aspects of the coffee industry, including a look at migratory birds in shade grown coffee regions and interpretive displays of traditional Turkish and Ethiopian coffee sets, picking baskets, and more than 40 coffee sacks from around the world.

Looking to become a responsible sipper? “Coffee” explores the environmental and social impacts of the coffee industry and recommends ways for consumers to make socially and environmentally responsible coffee purchases at the grocery store or in a coffee shop.
