Cheyenne Artists Guild features work by Donna Person and Dee James for Art Design and Dine

Donna Person and Dee James invite you to come by the Cheyenne Artists Guild in Holliday Park and visit with them during the December 13 Art Design and Dine. Both Dee and Donna are active in supporting the Guild.  Both serve on the board, Dee as 2012 President and Donna as Secretary. This December 13 from 5-8 pm, they will be showing some of their favorite pieces of art for this last Art Design and Dine of the 2012 season. 2Shot Art Show in Torrington offers close encounters with work by 21 regional artists

From Laramie's Joy Keown: This watercolor painting, "Close Encounter," was done from a photo that I took during our 2009 visit to the Serengeti in Tanzania.  I will be showing several Africa paintings as well as landscapes, western and wildlife paintings at the 2Shot Goose Hunt Art show this Friday and Saturday in Torrington.

View work by 21 artists from around the region at the annual 2Shot Goose Hunt Art Show at the Goshen County Fairgrounds Rendezvous Center in Torrington. Hours are noon-4 p.m. today with a quick draw from 6:30-7:30 p.m. with an auction to follow. UUCC WinterMart Dec. 14-15 offers local handmade wares for the holidays

Artist Statement:

“In 1964-1968, we were in Alaska, my husband was in the Air Force. He gave me a box of oils for my birthday and I had no idea what to do with them.  The Service Club offered art lessons for $1 for 1 night per week with a local artist.  I painted for a couple of years until Bob was transferred.  We came to Cheyenne in 1973 but it wasn’t until after the flood of 1985 that I joined the Cheyenne Artists Guild.  I took a class called  Sponges and Rags from Cheyenne artist  Maryalyce Larsen.  I’ve taken several workshops at the Guild and when attending the Wyoming Artists Association Conventions I would sign up for whatever was offered.   I prefer painting in oil but the paintbox got too heavy to carry to the CAG loft where I painted each Thursday.  I joined the Weekly Art Challenge a couple of years ago and have painted  with a box of Pelikan half pans.I had a one person show at the Cheyenne Civic Center in 1994.  Was honored to sell several pieces. The first time I entered the CFD Western Spirit Show, 2000, both my 16 x 20 and miniature painting were purchased. I’ve been juried into the CAG National show twice.”

Artwork by Connie Norman and Lili Francuz featured at studio sale in Old Town Fort Collins

This studio sale is down the road in Fort Collins, CO, but it features an artist from Cheyenne in Connie Norman and another artist with strong Wyoming roots -- Lili Francuz. Until he moved to Colorado, Lili was visual arts coordinator of the WAC and then the curator at the State Museum. So if you're in FoCo Dec. 1, drop in, say hey, and buy some art.

"Black Friday" becomes "Art Friday" at Trio Fine Art in Jackson

News from Trio Fine Art in Jackson:

Just in time for the holidays, Trio Fine Art will be hosting a showcase of smaller works with a special reception held on the traditional Black Friday. During “Art Friday,” November 23, the gallery will have extended hours (10 am- 8 pm) to host visitors and ring in the holidays with new artwork, live music and refreshments. Gallery artists include valley favorites: Jennifer L. Hoffman, Kathryn Mapes Turner, and Bill Sawczuk. 

Because the gallery artists/owners believe art is meant to be shared, they are providing this as a festive opportunity to make artwork attainable to as many visitors as possible.  The show will be on display through January 5, 2013.  Free shipping and free gift wrapping will be offered until Dec 24.

Featured artists:

Kathryn Mapes Turner: In this body of work, we include a lot of drawings.  For me, drawing is a very expressive medium that can illustrate the artist’s creative thought development.  It is a foundational practice that we use to understand our subject matter.  In this way drawings can communicate the artistic process in a dynamic way.

Jennifer L. Hoffman: The holiday season is always so full of hustle and bustle - Black Friday is exciting but hectic!  We thought we could provide a little bit of an artistic respite from the rush.  I love smaller works because you have to step in closer to take them in.  It’s almost as if I (as the artist) am in a dialogue with the viewer.  Drawings are special because they are so pure – there’s no color or impasto to hide behind.  It’s just the bare bones of my thought process.  Because they are both so personal, small works and drawings just seem to fit together!  I am excited to see this show come together.

 Bill Sawczuk: “Since we will be exhibiting a variety of media, it is a special opportunity to see works on paper as well as small oil studies. For this exhibition, I prepared a collection of small plein air paintings that feature historic local building and landscapes. In my drawings, I depict animals.”  This is a rare opportunity to acquire drawings by Sawczuk since he doesn’t always make them available for sale.

WOW announces Nov. 10 deadline for Affordable Art Show

This Works of Wyoming (WOW) exhibition will showcase Wyoming artists working in varied media. Works are to be retail priced under $100. We'll be promoting this event as an alternative to the big box store's Black Friday. This was our most successful event last year for sales, and we're expecting even more this year! Back up inventory should be anticipated. Submit up to 5 pieces for consideration in the following categories: original 2-D paintings, drawings, mixed media, printmaking, digital media, & photography. 3-D work: sculpture, metal, ceramics, glass, jewelry and mixed media. All work must be new to the gallery at Works of Wyoming (not previously shown), not mass produced, and copyright adherent. All work must be suitably framed, mounted, and wired for installation. Non-glare glass is preferred for photography purposes. Jurors reserve the right to disqualify any work not suitably presented, or any work not corresponding to the entry image or community standards. Size restriction for 2-D work: Outside frame dimensions no larger than 100 total inches.

How to Submit: submit up to 5 images of work via email to:wow@uwyo.edu as an attachment in jpeg format. Please include title, media or technique, & size of the work in the body of your email. Silk painting, pastels and snowflake-making on the schedule for next Art Design & Dine

Cody's Steve Schrepferman is featured artist at Clay Paper Scissors Gallery

This month we are featuring Steve Schrepferman, a Cody ceramicist, at Clay Paper Scissors in honor of National Crafts Month. Steve is a highly versatile potter with work from the gorgeously functional (drinking from one of his cups is lovely experience in balance and texture) to quirky functional to large scale urns and vases and wall hangings. The work is often thrown and then modified and always glazed with rich, deep colors. Some of the pieces in the gallery now have an almost African sense to them. My visual sensibility is rooted in the colors, textures, and rugged forms in the landscape of the American West. I am in awe of the immense vistas and canyons and feel a strong connection to the great physical and spiritual energy of this land. These are the energies I strive to capture in my work.

Art Design & Dine will be tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 11, from 5-8 p.m. Clay Paper Scissors is located at 1506 Thomes, Ste B, at the southeast corner of the building facing the tracks. Steve's work will be up through November.

Also during ADD: Mark Vinich, a studio artist, has artwork in the Teacher Show at the Civic Center; Mark and Camellia El-Antably's show, "Memories & Curious Conversations," continues at the Hynds Building at the corner of 16th and Capitol.

Kudos rolling in for Cheyenne's inaugural 17th Street Arts Festival

Arts Cheyenne reports this in its latest newsletter:

More than 2,500 area residents attended and celebrated Cheyenne's first community-wide arts festival, the 17th Street Arts Festival, last month. Arts Cheyenne and the Cheyenne Downtown Development Authority hosted the event on the new Dinneen Downtown Plaza.  The Festival featured dozens of visual and performance artists in the large Artists Tent and on the Performance Stage, located on 17th Street under the new 17th Street Lighting Project.  Hundreds of artistically-minded young people also took part in the participatory children's art and dance workshops at "Emmie's Corner." You'll find a showcase of all the Festival photos on the Arts Cheyenne website.

Post-festival evaluations from both attendees and artists were enthusiastic, with high marks for organization and art sales to patrons.  Comments included:

• "Keep doing it.  Cheyenne needs more things like this." (Attendee)
• "What a great new tradition.  It's nice to have colorful community events in Cheyenne." (Attendee)
• "I was stunned and impressed.  People commented on how excited they were that Cheyenne was doing this type of event." (Artist)
• "This show had it all.  Kudos to you folks.  I'd like to come back next year." (Artist)

The Festival also received support from sponsors and grant sources, including the Dinneen Family, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power, WEST, Inc., CBS Channel 5, Traders, Visit Cheyenne, the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund, and the Wyoming Arts Council.

Planning has already begun for the 17th Street Arts Festival next summer . . scheduled for August 16-17, 2013, also on the Dinneen Downtown Plaza.  

Reception for Paul Ng's photo exhibit set for Sept. 5 at the Community Fine Arts Center

Paul Ng's exhibit "Recollections: Two Decades of Photographic Images" will be on display Sept. 5-29 at the Community Fine Arts Center, 400 C St., Rock Springs. Vanda Edington and Terrie Lombardi team up for "Purely Pastel" opening at LCCC Sept. 12

Save the Date for Purely Pastel on Sept. 12, at 7 p.m., at the Easter and John Clay Fine Arts Gallery at Laramie County Community College. Cheyenne artist Vanda Edington will show her pastel work through Oct. 16. You won't want to miss Terrie Lombardi, a Denver artist who will do a pastel demo and show several of her pieces. There will be a display of pastel, papers, books and a slide show showing the production of pastel sticks at the Terry Ludwig Pastels factory during the reception.
