Call for entries: "Embracing our Differences"

"Embracing Our Differences" invites art submissions for its 10th annual outdoor art exhibit celebrating diversity. National and international submissions are encouraged. 39 artists will be selected for the exhibit. The exhibit will be displayed April and May 2013 at Island Park along Sarasota, Florida’s beautiful bayfront. Since 2004, the exhibit has been viewed by more than 1,300,000 visitors. The exhibit will contain 38 billboard-sized (16 feet wide by 12 1/2 feet high) images of the selected artworks.

Final selections will be chosen based on artistic excellence in reflection of the theme “embracing our differences”. Submissions will also be evaluated on how effectively it will read outdoors when enlarged to billboard size. Final selections will be made by a 3-judge panel of professional artists, curators and art professionals. A total of $3,000.00 in awards will be presented.

Submissions must be postmarked no later than January 7, 2013. There is no submission fee nor limit on the number of entries.

The mission of Embracing Our Differences is to use art as a catalyst for creating awareness and promoting the value of diversity, the benefits of inclusion and the significance of the active rejection of hatred and prejudice.

"Embracing Our Differences," an annual public display of billboard-sized art works, invites professional artists and photographers, amateurs, teachers, and students to participate in its eighth annual visual art exhibit celebrating diversity. Forty-five artists will be selected for the exhibit. Novelist Carl Hiaasen on his "litmus test" for choosing books

Mystery novelist Carl Hiaasen on how he chooses a book to read:

When I’m deciding to read a book, I never open to the first chapter, because that’s been revised and worked over 88 times. I’ll just turn to the middle of the book, to the middle of a chapter, and just read a random page and I’ll know right away whether this is the real deal or not. You can tell right away, if it’s really good, it’ll be really good on page 158. Lots of people can write a good first page but to sustain it, that’s my litmus test. If I flip to the middle of the book and there’s a piece of dialogue that’s just outstanding, or a description, then I’ll flip back to the first page and start it.

Dome artist's work at home on the range

Florida artist Brian Burkhardt will be in Laramie this week to assist with the installation of his solo exhibition, "moss doesn't grow on rolling stones . . . a vision of nature" by Brian Burkhardt.

Dome is the studio in which this rather "mad-scientist/artist" has playfully re-figured nature. His "Office Plant" series offer hybrids of plants and office machinery -- cell phones and fax machines.

For his Wyoming exhibition, he has created a new work, "Take Heed," an installation of caterpillers that include in braille "take" and "heed."

Three public programs are scheduled at the UW Art Museum in Laramie during Burkhardt's residency, all on Thurs., Sept. 3:

6:30 p.m., Art Talk
7:30 p.m., Panel: "Scientists View Nature Through the Lens of Art: The Seen and Unseen." UW faculty scheduled to respond to Burkhardt's work include Naomi Ward (microbial genomics, Molecular Biology), Carlos Martines del Rio (ecophysiology, Zoology), Pete Stahl (microbial and fungal ecology, Renewable Resources), Stephen Jackson (director, Program in Ecology) and Jeffrey Lockwood (natural sciences and humanities, Philosophy).

Before he began to focus on art, Burkhardt was a field hand and then an organic farmer. Here's a section of an article from Miami New Times about Burkhardt's Gallery Diet show last winter:

Burkhardt says that conveying a sense of the symbiotic relationship between man and nature in a world we are threatening to destroy is what keeps him motivated to create during these economically grim times.

"As a farmer or as an artist, you are always worried about the market," he rues. "To me, farming is like the art world in many ways. Right now I'm looking at my dome as a song with the sample of everything I've ever done inside it as the notes."

Call for artists: Rosa Parks Transit Station

The City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Art in Public Places Trust invite artists or artist teams to submit applications for the Rosa Parks Regional Transit Service (RTS) Downtown Station.

The public artwork will be installed at the Rosa Parks RTS Downtown Station. The space allows for lighting, tile, panels and paving of the artist’s design, choice and materials. The theme is left to the artist’s discretion, but the artist may choose to use the title of the station (Rosa Parks) as inspiration for the design. This public art project will enhance the aesthetic quality of the busy downtown bus station for those who use its services everyday. The artwork will be accessible and contribute to Gainesville’s community pride.

One artist or a team of artists will be selected after the following information has been reviewed. The following documentation must arrive by the postmark deadline of Friday, August 14, 2009:

1. Letter of Interest: This one page maximum letter should outline the artist’s approach to public art. Please highlight relevant past experience on projects of similar budget and scope.
2. General Design Concept/Theme Proposal: Describe your overall “theme” and style of artwork. Include artist name, fees, for all service, drawings, and any additional services provided upon invoice. Explain your proposed schedule, process, medium and method by which you will involve the Downtown RTS Bus Station users in concept development and/or design development.
3. Professional Resume: Resumes should not be more than two pages. Please note that artist teams should submit a resume for each team member.
4. Fabrication and Installation: Describe the anticipated fabrication and installation needs for the permanent art work.
5. Annotated Image List: The image list must be provided with the Artist’s name, title, location, medium, dimensions, date of work, budget, the corresponding image number and short description of images (up to 10 maximum). The format for this submission should be on a CD in .jpg format, with each image no larger than 1MB.6.

Call for entries: Philip Levine Poetry Prize

The Philip Levine Prize in Poetry is an annual book contest sponsored by the M.F.A. Program at California State University, Fresno. It offers a $1,500 prize and publication and distribution by Anhinga Press, a Florida-based press that has been publishing poetry for more than 25 years and is directed by University of Wyoming grad Rick Campbell. The winning author also receives 25 free author copies of his/her book.

The contest is named for poet Philip Levine who served as contest judge in 2001, 2002 and 2005. Philip Levine taught at CSUF for many years and is one of the best known and most highly-honored American poets. He has published 16 books of poems, as well as several volumes of translations and two collections of essays. His list of honors includes two National Book Awards, two National Book Critics Circle Awards, the American Book Award, the Ruth Lily Poetry Prize for Distinguished Poetic Achievement, and the Pulitzer Prize for poetry.

Judge for the 2008 competition is Oregon poet Dorianne Laux. Postmark deadline is Sept. 30, 2008. Manuscript should be original poetry, not previously published in book form, and should be 48-80 pages, no more than one poem per page. The entry fee is $25.
