The Lander Art Center is sponsoring the following workshop:

Non-Traditional Surface Design on Clay
Two-Day Workshop with Jenny Dowd

Explore non-glaze related surfaces and finishing techniques for bisqueware with a goal of exploring surface options for non-utilitarian sculpture. Using a variety of non-traditional materials such as tea, graphite, gesso, and wax, a surface will be built up then layered and rubbed through to create atmospheric painterly surfaces. Painting and drawing techniques will be used as well as wax transfer and other transfer methods. These unique and varied surfaces will be able to find their way into a variety of work.

WAC roster panel to meet in Cheyenne Jan. 21

The Wyoming Arts Council will hold its annual artist roster selection panel on Friday, Jan. 21, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., in the Arts Council Gallery, 2320 Capitol Ave., Cheyenne.

The meeting is open to the public.

Every year, the WAC invites applications for its roster. A panel of artists and arts professionals then convenes to review the applicants and select those that meet the criteria of “artistic merit of the artist” and “ability of the artist to successfully interact with an audience or in a public setting.”

Last year, the panel selected 12 new artists and arts groups, raising the number of talented Wyoming roster artists to 76. Any Wyoming arts organization, school or community can bring in any of these artists through an Arts Across Wyoming grant.

Win Ratz to conduct public enameling demo June 7 at Cheyenne Artists' Guild

"Win Ratz is presenting an enameling on metal workshop on June 12 and 13 at the Cheyenne Artists' Guild on Morrie Avenue. The workshop is filled, with a wait list. She will also give a demo at the Guild on Monday evening, June 7 at 7 p.m. This is free and open to the public. Opportunity will be given for trying out simple techniques."

Cheyenne roster artist Georgia Rowswell conducts workshops in Campbell County

Georgia Rowswell sends word via Facebook about her workshops in Campbell County:

"Just got back from a successful four-day paper-making workshop in Gillette (one of her students exhibits his work above). I taught paper-making and collage to over 100 kids! Lots of pulp and paper making going on."

Three new visual WAC roster artists

Justin Hayward – drawing and painting
Casper
A full-time professor of drawing and painting at Casper College, Justin Hayward studied illustration at Brigham Young University, and earned an M.F.A. in painting from the New York Academy of Art. He studied at Florence Academy of Art in Italy, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and in private studios of renowned artists. He has exhibited in many national juried shows including the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery for which he was a commended artist and finalist. His workshops are designed to develop one’s confidence and technical skill in observational drawing and painting. Maura Jacobsen – potter
Cheyenne
Maura is a graduate of the University of Wyoming with a B.A. in art. She has been a studio potter for the past fifteen years, and works exclusively in hand-thrown and hand-glazed stoneware. Her simplified forms and color-washed, outlined images give a delightful and uncomplicated quality to her pieces. Maura is a substitute teacher and instructs private wheel-throwing and hand-building classes for children and adults. Mark Koons – woodworker
Wheatland
Woodworker Mark Koons was an Army medic stationed in Japan, manned auto assembly lines, and did industrial construction before opening his Wheatland shop in 1981. A member of the Furniture Society, his work has been shown across the U.S. and in Canada. He uses North American hardwoods and has done pioneering explorations in the fields of endgrain, and bent, tapered laminations, occasionally writing and speaking about what he's learned. Mark has been called upon to judge and curate shows of fine craft. His work is in the permanent collections of the Wyoming State Museum and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center Museum. New artists approved for WAC roster

Eleven new artists have been approved for inclusion in the Wyoming Arts Council’s 2010-2011 artists’ roster.

They are Wendy De La Harpe, dancer and choreographer from Laramie; Equinox Trio, a classical music group from Casper; Justin Hayward, Casper visual artist; Maura Jacobsen, visual artist from Cheyenne; Jason Joyce, a poet from Cheyenne; Rick Kempa, a Rock Springs essayist and poet; Mark Koons, woodworker and furniture maker from Wheatland; Daron Little, cowboy singer/songwriter from Saratoga; Win Ratz, Cheyenne visual artist; Jeffrey Tish, theatre set designer from Cheyenne; and George Vlastos, Casper poet and teacher.

Selections were made by a panel of artists and arts leaders at a Jan. 21 meeting at the WAC in Cheyenne. These new artists will join 66 other talented artists and arts groups on the new roster, which will be available in print form and on the WAC web site in June.

WAC adds 11 new artists to roster

We have 11 new artists that were approved for the Wyoming Arts Council’s Artist Roster, now totaling 74, who represent the literary, visual and performing arts from across the state. I’ll be profiling them here over the next few days. The full-color, printed version of the roster will be out toward the end of May. Look for it in your mailboxes, as well as the 2010 Spring newsletter issue.

Wendy de la Harpe – dancer
Wendy de la Harpe was born and raised in South Africa, where she established a career as one of the country’s top choreographers in stage, television and film productions. She is a registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance, a leading international dance examination board specializing in classical ballet. From 2000-2009, Wendy was at Ballet Idaho, where she served as associate artistic director, interim academy director and education director. Wendy has written Dare 2 Dance, a curriculum that introduces students to cultural stories and music of South Africa, which also includes kinesthetic teaching techniques. Daron Little – singer/songwriter
Daron Little is a working ranch cowboy who is also a singer/songwriter. His cowboying has taken him through Louisiana, where he was born, Colorado, Nebraska, Montana, and Wyoming, where he currently ranches near Encampment. His CD “…The Faraway Look,” of songs that reflect the country and cowboy life, was released in 2009. He was named 2009 Academy of Western Artist’s Top Male Western Vocalist. He has performed at the Western Music Association Year End Festival, the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering, the Heber City Cowboy Gathering, the Devils Tower 12th Annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering, and The Grand Encampment Cowboy Gathering, among others. Equinox Trio – classical musicians
Violinist Jennifer Cowell, violist Gary DePaolo, and cellist Christine Dunbar have been playing together as a trio for the past seven years. Exploring the evolution of classical strings music, they feature selections from Mozart to contemporary composers. Equinox Trio performs for concerts, fundraising and arts events, social functions and weddings. Instructors and teachers in college and secondary schools, they are also principal players with the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra. Each member also provides private lessons to school age children. Georgia Rowswell conducts Pysanky egg class

From Cheyenne artist (and WAC roster artist) Georgia Rowswell:

Pysanky is a traditional Ukrainian craft for decorating Easter eggs. It is a wax resist technique which is basically batik for eggs! This Saturday, March 13, I will be teaching a Pysanky class from 9 a.m. until noon in my studio at 302 East 1st Avenue. The class is $25 and includes supplies and the all-important homemade cookie snack! The class is open to ages 8 and up. So join the fun and make as many eggs as you can in three hours. Andy Hackbarth at UW on March 3

From a UW press release:

Colorado native and award-winning singer/songwriter Andy Hackbarth will perform a concert Wednesday, March 3, at 8 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Union ballroom in Laramie.

Hackbarth plays flamenco and classical guitar with upbeat pop/folk song styling. This event is free.

To pursue his love for music, Hackbarth moved to Nashville.

"You don't realize how much you have to learn until you move to Nashville," he said. "Truly great songs are so rare. It's the best feeling in the world to know that you've written a song in which every word counts; one that forces everyone who hears it to stop, really listen, and look at the world in a completely different way."

Doc Thissen expands his photo horizons

Laramie photographer Doc Thissen is working on his B.F.A. by taking online classes offered by the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He's shooting some differenent subjects along the way. This one he calls "Shadowplay" and says "it was inspired by Paul Strand." He's revamping his web site and has a new blog at http://ddocspix.blogspot.com/.

Celtic Ensemble performs March 13 at Teton County Public Librarry

Wyoming Arts Council roster artist Judith Weikle and her Celtic Ensemble will perform on Saturday, March 13, 7 p.m. at the Teton County Public Library in Jackson. This event is free and open to the public.

Enjoy an evening of traditional Irish music in a small setting. Vocals, harp, fiddle, bodhran and guitar combine in an ethereal, uplifting blend of ballads and jigs in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. The band includes, Judith Weikle, Arla Burbank, Deb Carpenter, Liz McCorquodale, Karen O’Connor and Mimi Smith.
