Wyoming Arts Alliance seeks managing director

The Wyoming ArtsAlliance (WyAA) is advertising a 15- to 20-hour-per-week staff position of Managing Director. The starting salary is $15 an hour based on qualifications. The Managing Director can be located anywhere within the state of Wyoming. The application period will close Nov. 30, 2012.

The Managing Director, with assistance from the Board, will be responsible for:

·         Coordinating all WyAA Programs:

o        The Annual Education and Booking Conference

o        Arts Advocacy Day

·         Conducting annual membership drive

·         Assisting in identifying new development opportunities

o        Grants, foundations, individual donors

·         Maintaining consistent communication between Board and staff, Board and partners and Board and membership through

o        Email

o        Mailings

o        Phone Calls

o        Personal Visits

·         Producing annual legislative event

·         Developing new legislative and member networks

·         Arranging Board Meetings and Workshops

·         Maintaining social media, website, list serves, and advocacy networks

Requirements:

The Managing Director will need to travel several times a year to WyAA and the Wyoming Arts Council (WAC) Board meetings, to Cheyenne during the Legislative Session and around the state to recruit/maintain member contacts. Therefore the person needs a reliable vehicle, valid driver’s license and insurance.

The Managing Director will need a computer with current basic business programs.

The Managing Director will need experience and proficiency in doing mailings and computer database work.

WyAA will:

·         Pay for use of the MD personal vehicle at the state rate

·         Pay lodging and per diem for travel

·         Provide a USB drive on which to store the organization’s data

·         Provide additional computer programs unique to the organization

·         Provide an organization cell phone and data plan

WyAA Conference in Kemmerer will feature workshops by Arts Northwest and WESTAF presenters

75th anniversary bash planned for Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails

Happy 75th anniversary to our hard-working colleagues at the Wyoming Division of State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails:

A two-pronged program celebrating two major events within the Wyoming Division of State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails is scheduled at Curt Gowdy State Park, August 24, beginning at 4 p.m.

The dedication of the new Curt Gowdy State Park visitor center is scheduled for 4 p.m., near the park’s entrance. Funds for the building were provided through a generous donation by Bass Pro Shops and matching funds from the Wyoming State Legislature. Members of the Gowdy family, architect Randy Byers, Parks officials and State legislators will be on hand. A ceremonial ground breaking will be part of the festivities.

The public is invited to the dedication ceremony. Visitors will not have to pay an entry fee, and the public will be directed where to park.

The new facility, slated for completion June 2013, will feature interpretation of the state park and its founder, Curt Gowdy.

Gowdy, a native of Green River, served as the voice of the Boston Red Sox for 15 years, and became one of the nation’s premier sportscasters. He was the host of ABC’s popular series “American Sportsman,” for two decades.

He attended the University of Wyoming where he started on the basketball team and competed on the tennis team. An avid outdoorsman and fisherman, he spent a lifetime championing Wyoming’s natural beauty and world-class fishing and hunting.

Following the visitor center dedication, a Wyoming State Parks and Historic Sites 75th Anniversary Gala will be held at the Hynds Lodge beginning at 5 p.m.

The celebration will be attended by several state dignitaries, including former State Parks directors, and will include a barbecue and entertainment by Wyoming Arts Council roster artist, singer/songwriter Bryan Ragsdale.

Call for Artists: Art in the Parks

This summer Wyoming artists have an exciting opportunity to engage with the state’s many great parks and historic sites!

Wyoming State Parks and Cultural Resources is offering any Wyoming visual artist, of any age, working in any medium, the chance to submit an original piece of art for consideration in one of four categories: Professional Adult Artists, Amateur Adult Artists, Student Artists Grades K-8 and Student Artists Grades 9-12. Three awards will be given in each category, and the twelve winning works will be featured in a commemorative calendar and in an exhibition at the Wyoming State Museum.

• Two-dimensional works should not exceed 36” x 36”, including the frame. Two-dimensional works should not exceed 30 lbs. and be ready to hang with screw eyes or D-rings. • Works should be completed within the period of this competition; however, works up to three years old will be considered.

UW Writing Project and Dept. of Ed team up for week-long writing workshop in Laramie

This info comes from a UW press release. Writing Project workshops are great because writing teachers take classes from actual writers who also have teaching experience. It's fun too, and includes an open mic session July 18 at Night Heron Books with some fine Laramie writers. The sessions start July 16 so sign up soon. Here are the details:

The Wyoming Department of Education and the University of Wyoming Writing Project have joined together to bring the Wyoming Writer’s Workshop to Laramie July 16-20, at Laramie Junior High School.

The program offers open enrollment and teachers can attend by emailing marina-barela@wyo.gov or calling (307) 631-0637.

The workshop is designed to grow teachers of writing through professional development with other writing teachers. It is a national research-based model with documented success in growing students in not only writing but also reading, says Sheryl Lain, WDE instructional leader.

“The workshop is a complete immersion into the reading and writing processes,” Lain says. “Teachers will learn by doing. They will write, revise and publish within a supportive community of fellow teachers, and they will read and discuss together, emulating the best practices proven to be successful in balanced literacy classrooms.”

Included in the training is an open microphone session from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Night Heron Bookstore, 107 Ivinson St. Among readers are Pam Galbreath, nonfiction, an academic professional lecturer at UW with an MFA in creative writing; Aaron Graham, poetry, a UW master's candidate in English literature; Maggie Mullen, fiction, graduate student in creative writing at UW; and Diane Panozzo, fiction or nonfiction lecturer in the Honors English Colloquium at UW.

Governor's Capitol Art Exhibition purchase awards announced

This was announced Tuesday by the Wyoming State Museum:

Purchase Award recipients for the 2012 Governor’s Capitol Art Exhibition have been announced, and will be recognized during the show’s awards presentation ceremony Saturday, June 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hynds Building in downtown Cheyenne.

An exhibition of all 70 artistic pieces included in this year’s show will be on display at the Hynds Building June 30 and July 1, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“We will be purchasing eight artworks from this year’s show,” said the show’s coordinator and curator, David L. Newell. “That is up from six from last year’s exhibit. This year’s show also includes 70 artworks, as opposed to 43 last year.”

This year’s eight winning artists include: Mack Brislawn, of Laramie, for his painting “Somewhere in the Powder River Basin;” Travis Ivey, of Laramie, for his painting “Spring Thaw on the Little Laramie;” Tony James, of Cheyenne, for his photograph “High Plains Thunder;” and Georgia Rowswell, of Cheyenne, for her mixed media composition “Paint Pot – Yellowstone.”

Established under an initiative by Governor Jim Geringer and organized under the auspices of the Wyoming Arts Council and the Wyoming State Museum, the Governor’s Capitol Art Exhibition forms a collection of original Wyoming regional art for display in state offices. Works receiving Purchase Awards join this growing collection of prestigious art. The state’s five elected officials and representatives from other state agencies participated in the program to select the Purchase Award winners.

New look & new venue for 12th annual Governor's Capitol Art Exhibition

This year, the 12th Annual Governor’s Capitol Art Exhibition will feature a new look and a new venue with the show moving to the Hynds Building in downtown Cheyenne.

“We were searching for a way to expand the show, which has outgrown the constraints of the State Museum, and one which would accommodate other activities associated with the show in a more centralized setting,” David L. Newell, show organizer and curator of art at the Wyoming State Museum said. “The opportunity at the Hynds Building presented itself and we said yes!”

The Governor’s Capitol Art Exhibition is an annual juried group show featuring works from some of Wyoming’s best artists.

“Last year’s show included 43 works. This year we are able to include 70 works representing the creativity of 53 Wyoming artists,” Newell said. “And at 203 we also received a record number of submissions. I was thrilled that all areas of the state were represented in those submissions.”

All artwork in the show is for sale, as are the works in the adjoining Artist Alley. All sales benefit the purchase fund for the permanent art collection at the Wyoming State Museum.

Soldier-poet Brian Turner is judge for 2013 WAC creative writing fellowships in poetry

Brian Turner will be the judge for the 2013 Wyoming Arts Council creative writing fellowships in poetry. He is a soldier-poet who is the author of two poetry collections, Phantom Noise (2010) and Here, Bullet (2005) which won the 2005 Beatrice Hawley Award, the New York Times “Editor's Choice” selection, the 2006 Pen Center USA "Best in the West" award, and the 2007 Poets Prize, among others. Turner served seven years in the U.S. Army, including one year as an infantry team leader in Iraq with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. Prior to that, he was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1999-2000 with the 10th Mountain Division. Turner's poetry has been published in Poetry Daily, The Georgia Review, and other journals, and in the Voices in Wartime Anthology published in conjunction with the feature-length documentary film of the same name. Turner was also featured in Operation Homecoming, a unique documentary that explores the firsthand accounts of American servicemen and women through their own words. He earned an MFA from the University of Oregon and has lived abroad in South Korea. In 2009, Turner was selected as one of 50 United States Artists Fellows.

At the Casper College Literary Conference Sept. 14-15, 2012, Brian Turner will read from his work together with the fellowship winners. He also will participate on a panel about soldier-writers with Luis Carlos Montalvan, U.S. Army Iraq War veteran and author of "Until Tuesday: The Story of a Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him."

Call for entries: Wyoming Short Film Contest

For the fifth year running, the Wyoming Film Office is seeking submissions for the Wyoming Short Film Contest. Film makers can submit their videos online at www.wyomingshortfilmcontest.com by April 4, 2012.  A $25,000 first prize will be awarded to the winning entry with a storyline that takes place in Wyoming, features Wyoming, or presents the state as a major character.

Colin Stricklin, Film Office Specialist explains the process, “There are three stages to the contest that allows for more public involvement and engagement. The submission round, the public voting round, and the judges' panel round. After the submission round ends, all entries will go on to public voting. The ten short films with the most votes become finalists. Our judges' panel will review these finalists and select the ultimate winner.”  

The judging panel is made up of film production, visual arts and industry representatives and they will judge the entries based on certain criteria including cinematography, screenplay, acting, sound design, editing and overall production value.

Poetry Out Loud tonight in Cheyenne

From Linda Coatney: Local art teacher Mark Vinich silk-screened this design onto a piece of linen-looking fabric, a design that he came up with using elements of the Poetry Out Loud logo. It didn't work to try and cover up the previous printing on the bag with paint. Wonder Under was used to apply the piece of fabric to the front of the bag. I did some quick cross-stitching around the edges of the fabric and sewed a button on each one. These bags will be given to the student contestants with a copy of POL judge Jim Coppoc's book "Manhattan Beatitude, 1997".

The Poetry Out Loud state competition takes place tonight at the Historic Atlas Theatre in downtown Cheyenne. There will be 11 competitors reciting poetry. Jim Coppoc, from Ames, Iowa, joins Wyoming Poet Laureate Pat Frolander of Sundance and Tie Siding poet and educator Diane Panozzo as judges for the Wyoming Arts Council's Poetry Out Loud competition tonight at 7 p.m. in the Historic Atlas Theatre. Come on out and see high school students from around Wyoming battle it out for the title of Wyoming Poetry Out Loud champ. Winner travels to Washington, D.C., in May to compete for the national title and scholarship money.

Nomination deadline is Oct. 7 for 2011 Governor's Arts Awards

The Wyoming Arts Council is accepting nominations for the 2011 Governor’s Arts Awards, an annual honor presented to citizens, organizations, businesses or communities in The Equality State that make substantial contributions to the arts.

The awards are presented based on accomplishments that reflect substantial contributions made to the arts in Wyoming, and exemplify a long-term commitment to the arts. Nominations must be postmarked no later than October 7, 2011.

WyAA's annual conference will be in Evanston Nov. 13-15

News from Shasta Wiggington at the Wyoming Arts Alliance:

On November 13-15, the Wyoming Arts Alliance will be holding its annual Booking Conference in Evanston.

 
We are excited to host the conference this year at the newly renovated Historic Roundhouse and Railyards Complex in downtown Evanston.
 
There are a number of exciting new aspects of the conference to look forward to, such as a four-track workshop series, a visual arts gallery and the introduction of our new Executive Director, Lyndsay McCandless.

Call for entries: WBC's fourth annual Ag Photo Contest

The Wyoming Business Council's Agribusiness Division is now accepting photos for its fourth annual Ag Photo Contest.

Amateurs, professionals, youth and adults may submit photos to the Agribusiness Division until Sept. 1, 2011. While there are no subject categories, all submissions must be agriculture related and taken in Wyoming. Photos could include crops; livestock and farm animals; ag recreation and activities; or scenic agriculture. Photos may be in color or black and white. Contestants may submit multiple photos to the contest.

All contestants are eligible for the Grand Prize of $300. Adult contestants may win $150 and $75 for 1st and 2nd places respectively. Youth contestants may win $50 and $25 for 1st and 2nd places respectively. Winning photos will also be used in the 2012 AgriCulture Calendar issued in fall 2011.

AIR brochures winging their way to you

New Artist Image Registry brochures are in the mail!

The AIR is an online database of Wyoming visual artists, a program of the Wyoming Arts Council.

There is no registration. All WY artists are eligible. Just fill out and sign the AIR form and return it to the WAC with a CD of up to five images of your work.

AIR is in the testing stage but will go public later this summer. Check out the test site at http://wyomingartscouncil.org/artists/airsearch.aspx
