2Shot Art Show in Torrington offers close encounters with work by 21 regional artists

From Laramie's Joy Keown: This watercolor painting, "Close Encounter," was done from a photo that I took during our 2009 visit to the Serengeti in Tanzania.  I will be showing several Africa paintings as well as landscapes, western and wildlife paintings at the 2Shot Goose Hunt Art show this Friday and Saturday in Torrington.

View work by 21 artists from around the region at the annual 2Shot Goose Hunt Art Show at the Goshen County Fairgrounds Rendezvous Center in Torrington. Correction: Cheyenne Family YMCA silent auction will be held in May

Wyomingarts previously published news about the Cheyenne Family YMCA silent art auction deadline being April 30. Here's the correction:

Works by local artists Marlin Glasner, Tom Shaffer, Aaron Curry, Win Ratz, Joyce & Casey Stone will be up for bids at a silent auction held during May by the Cheyenne Family YMCA. The artwork may be viewed beginning May 1 in the swimming pool lobby. Proceeds go to the YMCA's Community Support Campaign. Photos, mineral specimens and works of art featured at "Follow the Fossil Trail" auction Feb. 25

The Tate Geological Museum in Casper is now selling tickets to its biennial fund-raiser to be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Casper Petroleum Club.

The special guest of honor will be Paul Hallock, former Casper College Foundation executive director who retired in June 2011.

“Follow the Fossil Trail” will feature a number of beautiful items for bid including mineral specimens, photography, and works of art, which were created specially for the fundraiser and then finished by local artists. In addition, raffle tickets are being sold for a Henry Rifle Lever Action .22.

From 6 to 8 p.m. wine and “elaborate” hors d’ oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will also be available. A live auction, featuring Dan Sullivan as auctioneer, will begin at 8:10 p.m. Dancing to live music by Rob Staffig will begin at 8:30.

Tickets are $50 for individuals, $90 for couples, and $400 for a table of six, which will include sponsor recognition and a mineral specimen.

NIC Fest features performances by Urban Island

Denver's Urban Island

NIC Fest at the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper starts at 5 this evening. The annual event features booths and demos by more than 60 visual artists and three days of musical entertainment.

The corner of Beech and 2nd street on the NIC Fest grounds will feature a whole new “unique, completely original” sound this year when the Urban Island, a steel drum band from Denver, performs on Saturday and Sunday, June 25-26.

Rick Henson, founder of Rocky Mountain Steel Bands, formed this ensemble when he recognized that steel pan drums are universally regarded as intriguing, fascinating, and beautiful instruments – yet they are confined to traditional "tropical" tunes. Urban Island utilizes the versatility of these melodious drums in performing favorite pop classics, light modern rock, and dance-able Caribbean folk tunes.

Performances are set for 12:30, 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday; and 10:50 a.m., 12:10 and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

"Cowgirl Up!" exhibit in Arizona features work by Cheyenne artist Gail Sundell

Cheyenne artist Gail Jones Sundell, recently returned from the Cowgirl Up! Invitational Exhibition and Sale in Arizona, stopped by the Wyoming Arts Council offices today.

Gail's sculptures ("Arco Iris" shown above) are featured in the exhibition at the Desert Cabelleros Western Museum in Wickenberg, Ariz. The show, subtitled "Art from the Other Half of the West," will be up through May 8. During the weekend of March 25-27, artists and art lovers swarmed Wickenburg to see the art and participate in the annual awards gala, auctions, chuckwagon breakfasts and a quick draw.

Gail sold three of her alabaster and limestone carvings during the gala weekend. Her work is featured on the museum web site and in the March issue of Western Art Collector magazine.

UPDATE: Handmade for Japan eBay auction

Wyomingarts has been tracking arts-oriented fund-raisers for the earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan. One Cheyenne artist and teacher, Connie Kazuko Norman, will be part of a Handmade for Japan auction on eBay. Here is the most recent information from Connie:

I sure many of have already heard of Handmade For Japan.  It is the brainchild of Ayumi Horie, and her friends, Ai Kanazawa Cheung and Kathryn Pombriant Manzella.  Handmade For Japan is an on-line benefit auction for the Japanese victims of the devastating earthquake and tsunami.  I am honored to be one of the artists that are contributing to the cause.  As many of you know that I am half Japanese and I have many relatives that live in Tokyo.  I have been lucky enough to have study ceramics in Japan as well.  My Japanese heritage has always very important to me. The people of Japan really need help with disaster relief.

The auction will be held next Thursday, March 24th, 8pm EST to Sunday, March 27th, 8pm EST on eBay and they will have assured bids so check in early. Right now Handmade For Japan has a public Facebook page where a previewing of items before the auction. Even if you're not on Facebook, you can see the items. Please help us get the word out so that we can reach our goal of raising more than $25,000. 100% of the proceeds will be given to Global Giving’s Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund.

The collection has grown to over 90 artists, many with well-known and respected names, and you will be astonished how many wonderful pieces of art that has been donated for the cause. 

Ayumi and her friends have been working tirelessly toward this event.  I have been amazed at every update.  Thank you guys for all your hard work!

University of Wyoming Art Museum hosts annual Gala Ball

The UW themed scooter was donated to the University of Wyoming Art Museum Gala live action by Laramie Ford, Steve and Brenda Marshall.

The University of Wyoming Art museum will host its 17th annual benefit ball, “Gala 2009: A Highland Fling,” at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, in the University of Wyoming Union Yellowstone Ballroom.

The Art Museum’s event of the year will include both silent and live auctions, run by auctioneer Dan Sullivan, gourmet dining and dancing to live music performed by Play It Forward.

“Tom and I are confident that we will have a sellout crowd again this year,” said Jacque Buchanan, Gala co-chair along with her husband UW President Tom Buchanan. “It seems that tough times bring out the best in our generous Art Museum supporters, and having an event where the men can wear skirts is certainly attracting some notice! The guys in kilts might decide to vie for a very special trip to Nova Scotia, where they’ll have additional opportunities to wear those tartans.”

Many other unique items will be up for grabs during this year’s live auction including Peter Fillerup’s bronze “Fanning a Twister-Steamboat,” a wonderful log dog house, paintings, art photographs and, of course, lots of single malt Scotch. Special items this year will be experiences that you and your family will enjoy—from going deep under the earth to explore the FMC mine to enjoying a “Chef’s Table” at the new Cavalryman Supper Club.

For those who like to take their chances, two raffles are being held to benefit the Museum as well. While the winners will be announced at the Gala dinner, they need not be present to win. A fabulous diamond necklace underwritten by Dooley Oil will be the first raffle drawn, and the second item is a $1,000 gas card provided by Gala sponsor Laramie GM Auto Center.

The Gala Benefit Ball is held annually to provide funds for the Art Museum’s exhibitions, education, collection and outreach programs that support nationally renowned and culturally significant exhibitions and programs for Wyoming and the surrounding area.

National Museum of Wildlife Art hosts variety of events for Western Visions fundraiser

The National Museum of Wildlife Art offers fine art for sale by more than 150 leading artists, ranging from photography to jewelry to painted miniatures and more as part of its 22nd annual Western Visions fundraiser. Arts-related events include a series of shows and sales, artist demonstrations and galas, with the majority of activities taking place September 16-18, during the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival. New to this year's festivities are a "Mini Safari" in Grand Teton National Park in the company of featured artists Lindsay Scott and Leo E. Osborne, and the raffle of a MINI Cooper at the Miniatures and More Show & Sale.

Meet the artists at Douglas Invitational

Accomplished artists from three states will be featured during the 18th Annual Douglas Invitational Art Show and Sale at the Wyoming Pioneer Museum, August 7-9.

The show begins Aug. 7 with a "Meet the Artists " opening night reception 7 to 11 p.m. The evening features a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. Tickets for the opening reception are $25 each.

The show continues on Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The popular Quick Draw event begins at 9 a.m., followed by a wine and cheese reception. During the Quick Draw, artists are given an hour to produce a piece of art. These artistic pieces are then auctioned beginning at 3 p.m. The show continues on Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Artists’ mediums include watercolor, acrylics, oils, bronze, woodcarving and pottery.

The Grant Redden Plein Air Workshop will be held in conjunction with the Minerva Teichert Invitational Art Show August 13-15, 2009, at Cottonwood Ranch, Cokeville, WY
　
Held in conjunction with the Minerva Teichert Invitational Art Show, the Grant Redden Plein Air workshop will provide landscape, wildlife and western artists an opportunity to receive 2 days of personal instruction from Grant Redden, one of the nation's top artists. The workshop will be held at the historic Cottonwood Ranch in Cokeville Wyoming. Tuition is $120 and includes a two-day workshop, artist cookout and an opening reception barbecue. Class size is limited to 12 students. The will be an instructor demonstration beginning at 8:30 a.m. each morning, and students will receive a critique of their work in progress. Workshop dates are Thursday and Friday, August 13 and 14.

Grant Redden lives and paints in southwestern Wyoming in the rural community of Hilliard with his wife and family. With no formal art training, he has studied under the tutelage of several master artists in today's art world: Mark Daily, Jim Norton, Walt Gonske, Gerald Fritzler, and Gerald Merfeld. Grant has participated in gallery group shows and annual shows by Settlerswest Gallery, the Charles Russell Museum, the Salon d Arts "le jeune" Show in 2005 and 2006, and the Coors Western Art Show in 2005 and 2006, in Denver, Colorado. He participated as a guest artist in 2000 with the Northwest Rendezvous Artist Group of Helena, Montana, and was been invited to show, as a guest artist, again in 2007. Grant has participated in the annual Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale in Cody, Wyoming for the past six years. He was awarded an Artists Choice Award in that show in 2006.
